I have a question.Just curious.

Why doesn't more people go on RC Flying Network. It's exactly like the
former RCU was and is very user friendly. Is it a personal thing or do
yall just have your favorite places to go for selling or reading like
Ebay,Google and stuff.

Just curious. I'm on web and can't do anything on RCU any longer so
decided to check out RCFN.It's really great except for one thing...Not
enough people that go there even tho it's a good place to go. Do people
know it exist or what..

Where do yall hang out.

Again,Just curious.
Thanx

If they're like me they indeed know it exists.

OTOH, I find it a bother and serious eater-of-my-hobby-time to have to
prowl through a bunch of different forums just to find the discussions
of interest to me.  Same problem with RCU, and several other similarly
structured sites.

Also, the RCU type sites including RCFN don't have an e-mail function
: the ability to have posts of interest forwarded to you via e-mail.

Yahoo has a 'better' approach, IMHO.  I habituate Futaba9z,
GSWarbirds, IMAA, and a couple other Yahoo groups.  These groups are
more focused and for the most part are moderated reasonably well.
They have the singular advantage of allowing you to receive no e-mails
at all (you have to log on to read the new posts), or to receive a
digest of recent posts, or to receive all posts via e-mail.

I prefer the latter, 'cuz ya never know when someone will pop up with
that true nugget of wisdom worth preserving.

Additionally, since each group is fairly narrow in it's area of
interest, you don't get any nut cases pumping out porn or 'Grow A
Bigger Hootus" crap.

There never has been a single site that did a very good job of being
all things to all r/c modelers.  Even USENET split up the old
rec.models.rc into several more focused news groups, and that was a
decade or more ago.  Maybe two, I forgot.

Maybe RCFN is interesting when you're starting out and haven't figured
out your likes and dislikes in the hobby, but I suspect that the folks
who have been at this nutty avocation for a long while are a bit more
refined in their reading preferences and have settled on specific
groups or mailing lists for their internet 'feedings'.

I did, a long time ago.

Lately, this news group has taken a turn I'm not sure I much care for,
in that the size of the twit filter seems to be growing at a fairly
constant rate.

Having said that, this august pack of lunatics is decidedly docile
compared to some of the other wrecks.

rec.woodworking has been thoroughly trashed by a couple of hate-monger
porn-artists intent on doing just that, trashing the news group with
porn.  Pretty soon they'll be there by themselves, as more and more
hobbyist and professional wood workers appear to be moving in droves
to Yahoo wood working venues because the bozos cannot get admitted
there.

Works for me.

Enjoy RCFN.  It'll probably do you some good.

When you've got your sights fixed on where you want to grow in the
hobby, you may find that RCFN doesn't fill the bill quite the way you
thought, and you may move on to more dedicated venues.
Cheers,

I personally like http://www.rcgroups.com
They have the biggest user base besides rcu and they are still free. I
dont see near the traffic there, but its still free.

Thanks
Jim

Unfortunately a lot of people don't know RCFN exists because some
forum sites (such as RCU) don't allow other sites to be mentioned.
They want to be the only game in town.

I no longer hang out at RCU.  I visit

Torqueroll.com (which I run)
RCFlying.net
this newsgroup
and occasionally RCGroups.com

all of which run the same software as the old RCU and are much easier
to use and navigate in my opinion, but thats just my preference.

Never heard of RCFN. What is the URL?

RCU still works for me.  Since I do not post advertisements or do auctions,
RCU is totally free to me.  Based on the number of new posts, I doubt
they've had the mass exodus predicted in this group.

I look at rcgroups.com but so far there are fewer posts there that I'm
interested in than on RCU.

I don't look for the site with the most post count or highest member
count. I look for quality, not quantity.
If you are just looking to read mass quantities of words with little
more relevance to the hobby besides trying to utilize words such as
"Grandma" and "Shoelaces" in a 13 word sentence that is RC related,
you may have found the right place. Yes, there is some useful
information there but, you need to sift through the heaps of garbage
to find it. There seems to be too many people trying to boost their
post count rather than modelers sharing information. Think about
it.... Those with the post counts in the thousands can't have to much
time to fly or build... can they? Far to many people visiting these
boards tend to feel that advice from a person with large posting
counts is credible. I find that people who post specific information
about an item are far more helpful.
If all you want to do is chat - 60,000 members can fill that bill.

Personally, I won't support RCU since Admin referred to most all the
users there as LEECHES.

Marc's definition of the RCU Leech:

"those who drain the sites resources which require money to provide
but don't pay anything for those resources" and on the flip side we
have "those who also drain the sites resources but pay a small amount
to cover what they drain out of it"

What category do you fit in?

===========================================

I'm one of "those who drain the sites resources which require money to
provide but don't pay anything for those resources".  I will not pay for the
info from any of the online forums.  That's why they have advertisements on
the pages.

However, if I were running classified ads or doing auctions, I'd expect to
have to pay something. The Dallas Morning News is full of advertisements,
but they charge individuals for placing classified ads.

Even though I will not pay money to read the forums, I will contribute info
to any of them if I think I have anything to add.  I'm registered with cru
and rcgroups; and have looked at torqueroll.  I bookmarked rcfn but have not
looked at it yet.  If any of them start asking me for money, I delete the
bookmark and move on.

I really do not pay attention to a person's post count when I read the
forums.  I try to look at the info and decide if it is applicable to what
I'm doing.  I'm pretty new to RC, but like to think I'm not a total idiot
when it comes to analyzing info that is presented to me.

This newsgroup, and the forums, are not the holy grail as far as I can tell.
If they all go away tonight, I'll still take my plane to the field Saturday
and have a really good time.

If I cannot post a question to one of the forums, or the newsgroup, I'll
just ask someone at the field or the LHS.  When I do pick up info here or in
one of the forums, I might still ask at the field or LHS to validate the
info or to clarify my understanding.
