Hi all
Any comments.
The powers that be in NZ have decreed that all frequencies above
72.5mHz are no longer to be used here (conflict with R/c cranes, log
hawlers and rail shunting engines).
I was on 72.550mHz (Ch. 38 US) :-{
In process of moving to 72.250mHz (Ch. 23 US).
JR and FMA brand R/x (maybe others) can be used on any frequency in
the 72mHz band.
Futaba have Hi and Lo 72mHz R/x and say Hi band R/x with Lo (Ch. 23)
crystal are not compatible.
Took all gear to the field and set up a test.
With T/x (aerial down) 30 paces away, tried every compatible
combination.
T/x module (Ch. 38 and 23 I have both for test), and Futaba R/x (Hi
and Lo with R/x crystals for 38 and 23).
Found no problems with Hi R/x with Lo crystal installed.
At about 60 paces between T/x and R/x had jittering of servos
with Hi to Hi combination as expected as well as Hi to Lo
combinations.
Are Futaba being super cautious about Hi R/x - Lo crystal
combinations.
Any one regularly swap Hi - Lo crystals in Futaba gear.

More of an issue in the US as there they share the whole 72Mhz spectrum
unlike here in NZ. Remember in the US they can't even swap out Rx
crystals without a pro retune because of using frequency spots that fall
between those used by primary (money paying) frequency users.
Do a range check etc and if all is well fly!!
Cheers.

Not true in the US.
If you use the same brand RX crystal, and follow the hi/lo band rule for
Futaba, then you can change out receiver crystals all day long and not have
to retune. Obviously, it's always smart to range check before a day of
flying whether you changed the RX crystal or not.

This same subject came up a little while ago. I contacted one of the more
reputable radio service centers (Radio South) here in the US. To paraphrase
their response, as long as it ground checks OK, go for it!
