Hi I thinking of building the Four* 40..I have 2 engines a OS 46fx and
a Irvine 40.. Which is better for the 4*..I like flying more of a
docile plane then a rocket. Also planning on sheeting the LE of the
wings n turttle deck.
Single servo should pose any problems..Any thought or suggestions are
welcomed

Hi Dan,
The 4 Star is a great model. I've flown them with motors lots less powerful
than either one you mentioned. An OS .40 FP for instance.
If your reason for sheeting the surfaces is additional strength, it's not
needed. Sheeting the LE does make covering much easier though. Also if
the turtle deck sticks are on the soft side, they are easily broken in
handling.
The only chronic problems I've seen with 4 Stars is the landing gear block
busting loose from the fuse on hard landings. Some of our club members
solve that by using nylon screws to affix the gear to the block.
Other members solve it by doing a better job landing. <G>
enjoy
Happy Flying,
Mike

I had one, can't say it was one of my favorites. Had an TT Pro .46 on it
and it was like a rocket, which I liked. Inverted it was too flakey,
knife edge to much coupling. If you change anything change the aluminum
landing gear. Much to springy, you really have to grease a landing with
this plane on asphalt. I like the old GP Sportster and Ultra Sport much
more.

Both of those engines would have plenty of power for the way you want to
fly. You can always throttle back!! You shouldn't need to sheet the
leading edges. My suggestion is to jump to the 4*60. I think they fly
better. They are not perfect aerobatic planes, but do the basics well and
are a lot of fun to fly.

The 4 star was my 2nd (and 3rd) plane. Unless they changed the design
(this was way back when it first came out), you'll need a long engine
mount for a 2 stroke.
As has been mentioned, the landing gear block is a big weak spot in this
plane. Use tri stock reinforcement and some glass cloth in this area
with epoxy in all joints.
Otherwise, its a terrific plane. I have a 4 star 120 waiting in my stash
to be built.

I would go with the Irvine 40, I flew mine with a Webra
Speed 40 and it went like a raped ape, yet flew almost like a trainer
when throttled back.
The single servo (I assume you mean the aileron) will do the job, if
your thinking of flapperons, this plane is a real floater anyways.
Definitely beef up the landing gear block and replace the flexable
control rods with Sullivan's red and yellow Golden-N-Rod. My next 4*40
will also sport a Sullivan tail wheel bracket.
I think it is a very strong design and does not require extra
sheeting, mine handled some fairly violent snap rolls as well as some
pretty rough landings with out a problem, other than ripping out the
landing gear.
I thoroughly enjoyed my 4*40 until I trashed it doing a low pass
knife edge (it doesn't knife edge very well). I bought another kit and
plan on building it to fly when I've had enough of the Extra 300 and
just want to do some mild flying.
I think you'll be happy with a 4*40.

Hi Guys Well the 4*40 has the Irvine 40 in it..Just had one
flight and it seams to right choice..The engine with an Apc 11/4 prop
10% Omega OS A3 plug. Has more then enough power for this plane..P.S.
This plane flwe great on it's 1st flight.

I had one with a Rossi on it. The wing just kinda exploded. Man what a
sight.
