I have been reading this group for at least 3 years.  During the last 3-4 weeks
many very disgusting off topic posts have been showing up.  What is going on?
Who is posting this garbage and turning a good thing into an x-rated forum?

Is there some way to filter this trash ?

Yep it's called don't open the messages or read and let your mind filter the
drivel out for you, me I use both methods.

I don't open them, but the subject heading itself makes it so I can't have the
NG open with my son sitting nearby.  He reads the subjects too !

What are you talking about? in the last couple of weeks the only foul
language I have seen is a post by me. I have apologised for this. (I was in
a foul mood after wrecking my new Hornet CP and I had nobody to vent spleen
too).
There is also very little spam in this NG.
If it offends you too much just add commenly known expletives to your kill
file.

get a news service that is better at filtering spam

I use charter and i have not SEEN any bad posts here, also had a significant
reduction in dropped posts in binaries.

or did you mean the posts about electric flyers?

Assuming this wasn't simply venting, if you really can't find any information
inside AOL on how to filter usenet headers, try Googling something like:

+AOL +usenet +headers +filter

and see where it leads you.

But, hell, for your good money you'd think AOL would offer "usenet nannies",
wouldn't ya? Sheesh...

You are wanting VALUE from AOL? That's your first mistake.

No, just ignore it.

All NG's are targets for silly teenagers and scammers.

Its easier to just hit 'skip thread' or in teh case of Netcsape
newsreaders 'ignore thread'

Its pretty obvous from the titles which ones are best avoided. Unless
you fancy a snall flame war out of sheer boredom...

Usent wouldn't be usenet without teh odd 'my dog ate the canary so I
****ed my dog' thread.

The only thing I think of when you say "disgusting" would be some kind
of porn ads, but I haven't seen any of that here at all (as far as I know).
Now, you're GOING to get some occasional "colloquial" language that you
might find offensive but I doubt if you're going to see any language that
your young son hasn't already heard (and may even use) himself after school
with his little buddies.
Just filter for key words and you won't have to worry about it.
If you think it gets nasty here, try looking at the politics, guns, or
Limbaugh newsgroups. Now THOSE groups get pretty fired up, but still no porn
that I'm aware of.

Hi Steve;

Clearly, not everyone is seeing these messages (I guess some ISP's delete
them).

I also found that the sender is making it difficult by rotating the domain
name.  It's not just "shawcable.net", it's two letters, plus
"shawcable.net", so you can't just add it to the blocked sender list.

You're using Outlook Express, I take it?  Here's what I did:  Hit  Tools |
Message Rules | News... and add a new rule that reads, "Where the 'from'
line contains 'shawcable.net', Delete It".

It did not clean up my reader of existing messages, but I think it will
prevent further ones from coming in.

Good luck.  You're right - I'm getting uneasy even opening the reader
anymore.

Dan.
