Something else worth looking at is Gmax
http://www.discreet.com/products/gmax

This is a completely free 3D CAD/modelling program and is very easy to use.
You can import DXF files into it too, such as produced by most CAD programs
and with a bit of work you can then turn your 2D drawings into 3D models
which you can also animate.

I've just been using it to help in the design of some retracts. It's a good
way to spot potential problems with mechanical designs before you start to
cut wood/metal, particularly if you're not wonderful at visuallising (sp?)
CAD drawings in 3D.
