Has anyone ever had anything shipped from Tower Hobbies to an overseas APO?
Did it go okay? How long did it take? Damage? I have a cousin in the Azores
islands, where an American base is located, and someone has offered to let
him use his APO. He wants a RTF trainer and I'm wondering is this is a good
idea?

If you can select Priority Mail, then it will go just fine.  I have lived in
the UK for 4 years and all of my stateside mail comes to my FPO address.
Tracking will not work, though, but insurance will.

I have a friend who spent quite a few years in Europe with the military.  He
shipped a bunch of model stuff as well as motorcycle parts through the APO.
Said he never had a problem.  I don't know about time.  That I'm sure will
vary depending on the package size, shape, etc and where in the world it's
going to.  Some places no doubt get better/frequent service than others.
I'm sure Tower is experienced with dealing with any peculiarities an APO
might have.

I was in the Azores (twice 85-88 and 95-96) and never had a problem with
Tower shipping to the APO address.  I also ordered stuff for my Portuguese
friends...it wasn't technically allowed by the APO but as long as the
package is addressed to the military member and (s)he doesn't get caught it
all works fine.  Usually took 2-3 weeks and no more damage than regular
stateside delivery

Terciera Island / Lajes has one of the best slope sites I have ever
seen...see if your friend likes gliders  ;-)

Priority Mail is sometimes getting to me in 3 working days!  Average is
about 5-6.

Do you remember what this location is called and/or how to get there. This
might not be a bad idea, plus I'll be going there to visit family next year,
and getting a sloper there is a much easier proposition.

It's on the top of the mountain that bisects the island.  I can't remember
the name of the place but it has an old WW2 bunker on the top and is a great
place to take pictures.  It's above the town of Praia (sp).  I'm sure
anybody who lives there will know how to get up there.  The paraglider
pilots were just beginning to use the site regularly when I left.  The
elevation is 500 meters or so and there is a road along the entire 4 mile
length.  You can get out of your car and toss your glider anywhere and it's
soarable on both sides.

You can also soar the cliffs above the ship dock near the airbase.

Awesome place.  If you play golf, take your clubs...just a heads up  ;-)
