Building an old PT-20 trainer with my son and decided to convert to
electric power so we can fly at the local schoolyard and not annoy the
neighbors with the noise of glow power.

I've been doing some research and have come up with the following list
of motor, ESC etc and was looking for opinions/comments from the more
knowledgeable on my "solution":

AXI 2820/10 External Rotor Brushless Motor

Jeti Advance PLUS 40 Amp Brushless Controller with Program Card

45mm Spinner/Collet Shaft Adapter, 5mm

10x7 APC Prop

Radial Mount Set for AXI 2820 and 2826 Series Brushless Motors

(Also looking at this motor as it seem to have similar performance
specs:  PJS 3D 800E Outrunner Brushless Motor)

Thunder Power 3S2P 4200 mAh "Pro Lite" 11.1V LiPoly Pack

Thunder Power 2-5 Cell LiPo Balancer  (Is this necessary?  I've got a
Triton charger)

Or one of the following

PQ "Twenty" 3 Cell 11.1V 3700 mAh LiPo Pack

PQ 3 Cell 11.1V 4000 mAh LiPo Pack

PQ 3 Cell 11.1V 4400 mAh LiPo Pack

PQPCM3S  PCM GUARD for 3S LiPoly Packs (Again, necessary??)

I'm not sold on a particular brand so suggestions for other
manufacturers would be appreciated.

Thx!!

Already did.  I'm pretty green when it comes to this electric stuff so
the numbers don't tell me a lot.  Obviously you're more knowledgeable
than I in that you've developed and brought to market those products.
Perhaps suggestions of specific Hurricane products that would be good
substitutes for the items I listed???  Like I said, I'm not married to
any particular brand name....  What kind of warranty (if any) do you
offer??

I'd still like to know if I'm on the right track with my choices.  I'd
hate to spend several hundred dollars and end up with an underpowered
model.  Conversely, I don't want to bolt on more than I need..

Good point.
Give me some data on the airplane also. Wingspan, wing area, flying weight,
etc. I'll guide you through it.

Amazingly, there's no info on the box except for wingpsan and engine
size required so I hit up the Great Planes web site for the info:

Specifications
PT-20 MKII

Wingspan: 52.75 in (1340 mm)
Wing Area: 515 sq in (33.2 dm2)
Weight: 3.5-4.5 lb (1590-2040 g)
Wing Loading: 16-20 oz/sq ft (49-61 g/dm2)
Fuselage Length: 45.5 in (1160 mm)

Rx witll be a Futaba FPR127DF.
Elevator & rudder servos will be Futaba FP-S148s.  Am going to look at
mini servos toactuate each aileron (1 in each wing as I'm not a big
fan of the single servo, torque tube method) but those may be the
S148s in the end.

Again, I'd like to see something in the 11.1v, 4000MAh range for the
LiPo battery...

I was going to outfit the model with a Magnum XL .25 engine which is
probably a lot of power for this model as the box says it'll fly with
a .15.  The schoolyard where we're fly it does have a decent breeze
(5-7mph) pretty much all the time, but it does get stronger some
afternoons so power to penetrate the wind would help.  (Besides, I
don't need to run full out all the time.)

Lemme know if ya need more info.

Thx!

This was my first trainer and it flew great with an FP-15.  More than enough
power for learning.  I would guess that 3000mAh LiPo with a good brushless
such as an AXI 2820/10 would be a good starting point.

won't be wrong with that, 3s LIPO 4000 mah as suggested and 11x7 prop..

That's the motor I was looking at after doing some reading and taking
some educated guesses at the model's built up weight.  Just looking
for some more info to reinforce what I found and maybe gain a little
more knowledge.

Your shopping list looks just fine.  The 4 AH LiPo is more than
enough, and that's good.  Their lifetime is greatly extended by
keeping the discharge rate  below the vendor's rating, flight time is
extended, and the weight difference isn't all that much.
The charge guard OR balancer is a good safety measure, but you don't
need both.  Main difference is the charge guard only detects cell
imbalance and shuts down the charge current when 4.2 V is exceeded by
any cell, and you have to correct by charging the weaker cells one at
a time, while the balancer automatically does this as needed.
At this time TP has the proven track record on 3rd generation packs,
while the PQ 20's are the new kid on the block, so I'd go with the TP,
FWIW.

I was leaning towards the TP packs as I have yet to read anything bad
about 'em.  I'd rather spend a few bucks more for a known quality than
to skimp and replace more often.

Thx for the info..  Think I'll break out the Master Card and start
ordering.

I've had a PT Electric, original one, that I purchased, and half built
back in the 80's, still is intact as if I had purchased it recently
The wing was built but not covered, but will do so soon, so I also hav
also been looking at ways to mod this electric plane before taking it o
its maiden flight.  My research so far has not shown much in terms of u
to date motor and battery options, but my experience with airplanes o
this size tells me that the following equipment should also fly it wit
plenty power.

Motor: BP 2915-5D Outrunner BL Motor (equiv to a a .30 Glow Eng)
Prop: APC 9x7.5E or 10x7E
ESC: 45 amp with BEC and LVCO
Battery: 3000 - 4000mah 3scell pack 40C (2px3s as option)

Eventually I am going to mod the wing for ailerons and go with
stearable front wheel, just makes for a nicer controlled model thi
way.

I'd ike to hear of others that perhaps have modified this electri
plane and we just don't know of.  Any other options suggestion t
equipment, brands, etc, is welcomed. I'm going to continue searchin
and see if there is more on the convertion of this electric plane
