Howdy all. I've been a modeler for many years. FF CL RC, just about
everything.
Except flight sim for RC.
I was given a copy of Realflight version one with the "transmitter" as
the interface instead of a joystick.
I know you can use keyboard as a controller but even that won't work.
The "transmitter" has a serial plug at the end of cord but my computer
uses the lone serial port for the monitor.
Plenty of usb ports available.
Is there a usb-serial adapter that will get me connected?
Seems like a simple thing but I'm kinda computer dumb.
Thanks
Dan

That is for the joystick port, usually in your soundcard. If you are using a
laptop, you probably don't have one.

Hi Daniel,
As Dave indicated that transmitter probably has a game port connector (not
serial). My SBLive sound card has a game port but I don't know whether
newer cards have one. In any event, all is not lost. Just Google "Gameport
to USB converter" you'll get a bunch of hits. Cost will probably be $25 to
$35. Good luck.

I don't know if it will work for RealFlight 1, but I've got RealFlight G2,
and I use a Rockfire Serial-to-USB converter on my notebook. It took only a
little configuration, and there was even a sheet telling me which position
the switch should be in for G2, even though I hadn't communicated my need to
the company.
I got mine from USB Cable in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

No. I don't work for them. I was just very happy with the service and
product.

Thanks guys. I didn't think of it as a gameport to usb but that must be
what I need. Computer is a 1 yr old emachine. No gameport is showing.
Back when this software first available did all computers have
gameports? Maybe I can get it to un on the macintosh.
Nice day off project anyway.

I misspoke. It's not Serial-to-USB, it is Gameport/Joystick-to-USB.
It works well, in any case.

The real flight G-3 is a serial port interface, not a soundcard game port
interface. You can use a USB/serial adapter, but the best route to go is
purchase a high speed PCI serial port card. Some computers have a
integrated serial port off the motherboard, that is not wired to the
outside. You would need a riser unique to your motherboard. USB to serial
adapters do not always work properly, and sometimes they are software
controlled, and will occupy part of your RAM to run in the background, and
will be slightly slower than a straight serial interface.

Hi Dan
Maybe this will do?:
FMSUSB:
http://www.cattopasto.com/Elettronica/FMSUSB/FMSUSB.php
Quote: "...
Searching the web for an RC(PPM) to FMS (Flying Model Simulator) USB
interface i didn't find such a device for free and with interesting
characteristics. For this reason i decided to start the developing of
the FMSUSB. The name could be not so appropriate because this is an
interface that converts the PPM signal coming out from the RC to a
Windows Joystick, so it can be used not only with the famous FMS, but
also with all the games that are allowing a joystick as an input. For
example you can use your RC also to drive a car. Another interesting
thing is that no extra driver is needed to allow this circuit to work on
a Windows 2000 or XP system, really plug and play!!!

I just bought the same adapter from radio shack and VOILA it works
great.
7 bucks was a fair price. they have anothe one that is $18 but they look
identical to me.
Thanks for the help. Now I gotta get some upgrades. Anybody got a copy
disc of some different planes or whatever?
CJ - 28 May 2006 04:01 GMT
Daniel,
Glad it worked for you. I have a killer Sukhoi for 3D practice. This one
is a 40% (guesstimate), weighs about 35lbs powered with a Brison 6.4 twin.
It has the Sig Sukhoi ARF trim. You can torque-roll this one with practice
all day long. It is actually the closest I have come to "mimicking" the
real thing that I have tried. Course, thats an opinion.
Glad your up and going...guess I bought the expensive adapter ! Damn
retailers ! lol

so great) words of knowledge:

I am using the following for G2:
Radio Shack Game Port to USB converter P/N: 06A02
Set the switch for Joystick A (position 2).
Go into Windows and set it up there, THEN go into G2 and set it up there.
