I just received the beta version of the new TME Xtrema Lithium
Charger/Wattmeter. It allows you to set the charge cut off voltage to 3.6
volts/cell for A123 M1 packs. I've only had it on the bench for an hour so
can't tell you much more.
Here are the specs found at: http://www.tmenet.com/xtrema.htm
a.. Charges 1 to 10 Cell Lithium Batteries at up to 8 Amps
b.. Includes battery temperature sensor with programmable limits for extra
safety!
c.. Temp probe attaches easily with unique Velcro® strap!
d.. Programmable safety timer feature.
e.. Battery memory stores your favorite pack settings.
f.. NO need to calculate volts or amps, simply enter cell count and mah
rating!
g.. Volts per cell is programmable at 4.2V, 4.15V, 4.1V etc. to let you
choose between maximum power charge or conservative charge to lengthen
battery life!
h.. Unique Safe Storage Charge mode at 3.7volts/cell for Safe Long term
LiPo storage!
i.. Special 3.6 volt per cell for m1 Hypersonic Lithium Ion cells from
A123 Systems
j.. 10.5 to 15 Volt input range perfect for the field!
And a wattmeter feature is also included;
Our wattmeter has features not found anywhere else! Like simultaneous
display of the standard current, volts and watts along with temperature and
horsepower displays!. The large LCD allows us to do this and the temperature
probe functions to monitor motor or battery temp while you are testing.
Peaks are also being recorded and are displayed in a separate window.
Why do you need a wattmeter? It helps you determine if you are stressing or
damaging your electric motor or battery with the prop / load you have placed
on it. Can your battery actually hold up to the demands you place? Are you
on the verge of burning out your motor? Do you have a short in your motor?
Out of balance battery? Is your cutoff on your speed controller working
properly? To summarize you need it to optimize motor performance while
measuring, testing, and matching your components.
a.. Large 4 x 20 LCD simultaneously displays:
b.. Volts - up to 60 Volts
c.. Amps - up to 100 amps peak (50 amps continuous)
d.. Watts - up to 6000 peak watts (3000 watts continuous)
e.. Temperature up to 300 deg F connects to motor or battery while
measuring watts!
f.. Horsepower - up to 8.1 Hp peak (4 Hp continuous)
g.. Alternate display records: Peak Amps, Voltage minimum (droop), Peak
Temperature, Calculated Watts and Hp from min Voltage and Current Peak
And it is made in the USA! This one is one to watch, it is going to be a
winner form what I have seen so far.

Sounds nice Red, but for $240 it will have to mow the lawn and take
out the garbage before I'm hooked.

I might make the plunge someday. I do respect TME, as an owner/user
of their tach after getting fed up with the el cheapos. Just not
ready for this yet. The $20 (frequent sale price at Hobby People)
RipMax Quattro does the job for me now, and as safely as anything in
the marketplace. I use mainly 2S and 3S packs up to 2100 mah, and
only one larger 4 AH 3s pack. When/if I need to charge A123 packs or
10S packs at 8A, maybe. Don't really need the wattmeter functions.
Rather than breaking into the power circuit, I prefer to use a Wavetek
AC68 DC clamp-on ammeter. Of course that approach is for those of us
that tinker with things electronic - it cost more than the TME charger
in toto. For guys that haven't acquired such gizmos in support of
other hobby interests, the built-in wattmeter is a nice feature.

I can certanly understand that the Xtrema may not be for you right now
It caters to the all out electric flyer that flys everything fro
foamies to Giant scale. It also appeals to someone flying foamies no
but is dreaming about flying bigger electrics some day. The Xtrema is
charger you will not outgrow. We designed it that way. We are sick an
tired of this throw away society that we have become. New, product
don't seem to have any long term value any more. That is why we giv
away free lifetime updates.
Think of the value that represents. We met the challange with the M
cells and had a firmware update one week after we released our initia
product. And we will do the same thing again when the new "m
hypersteroid wizz bang" battery comes out next month
As far as taking out the garbage and mowing the lawn goes, th
processor we use is a very powerful processor that is used in man
commercial robots. If we get enough interest we could certainly ad
those features! :) Of course motors and servos are optional and som
assembly will be required! (batteries not included!) :(
Here is a good deal for you and anyone else that thinks the Xtrema ma
be something they may want. We are giving one away. FREE! Simply go t
'www.theXtrema.com' (http://www.thextrema.com/) and click on Fre
Xtrema Giveaway The next giveaway is on Sept 1..... Wow, that
tomorrow!!..
