Time-Warner corporate is dropping usenet news as of June 23, 2008.

Please help by asking them to keep it.  The person to call works for the TW president:

Word is out (on another group) that there is an alternative, and it is free,
at that.

Set up a new account on your newsreading program, and point it at:

nntp.aioe.org

I have not tried it yet, but several out there say it works well, and it is
available anywhere with an internet connection.

Thanks a bunch for the info. It works great.

More and more major ISP's are deciding that the legal and technical
problems in carrying a service that is the biggests and most unruly and
ungovernable of all the internet services simply isn't worth it for the
few people who use it regularly.

This is probably good news as those whpo do can move to decdicated
machines on either a fee basis, or sometimes a free basis.

I have moved to motzarella.org for newgroup access. You only need to
register once with a legitimate email address and set up a password
with them. There is no charge for this.

I moved because verizon has decided that they are only going to carry
the big 8 newsgroups as well as their own internal groups. I frequent
alt.os.linux.ubuntu which isn't in one of the big 8 groups.

I just tried this one too. Works great also.

Just out of curiosity, what are the big 8 groups?

They are:
comp.*
humanities.*
misc.*
news.*
rec.*
sci.*
soc.*
talk.*

rec.models.rc.air is obviously part of the rec.* group so there is no
problem there. However, alt.* is not going to be offered after the
26th of June and I frequent alt.os.linux.ubuntu. The biggest reason is
because there is a lot of porn in the alt.* group some of it being
child porn. So the New York AG took the draconian approach instead of
blocking just the binaries groups where the child porn is being
posted.

Reality check: this has precious little to do with anything that *any*
government agency - at *any* level - has had to say on the matter. It was
merely a gold-plated excuse to enable something the large cable-company ISPs
would have eventually done anyway. Now they can hang their virtual hats on the
supposition that they're actually doing something "good". Which is BS.

What this is all about is the large cable-company ISPs punting something that
(a) provides zero income to them (no place to stick in-line advertisements),
(b) costs them money to provide (whether their own infrastructure or
outsourced), and (c) actually competes with their business model (read: folks
downloading content from usenet binary groups are less inclined to "rent"
anything from cable-company OnDemand offerings).

It's a no-brainer for Time-Warner and Verizon (and likely any other
large-but-faceless cable-company ISP) to get rid of the virtually
uncontrollable alt.* hierarchy. And that's the first shoe to drop...

For those who are not inclined to download binaries, there are plenty of free
usenet servers that cover the tens of thousands of discussion-only groups.
www.motzarella.com, for one...

Couldn't have said it better myself...

And in the process neatly sidestep any demented legislation that might
sue them because some bozo in outer mongolia posts something abusive, or
illegal on the US server on which it may end up.

I believe there is consuderabl child porn at least advertised via
usenet, for example.

Given that this makes them no money, and may render them liable for a
hefty fine, why should they spend man hours deleting and monitoring it?

I thought for a minute that you were referring to 8 specific groups, not
the hierarchies.  This makes more sense.  Thanks.

I just set this up in Outlook Express and it works great.  Thought I'd
pass it along.

The only drawback (or limitation) is that it will not go to
alt.binaries.pictures.aviation, of probably any alt.binaries groups.

You can pay a monthy fee and get those groups with other providers.

Yep, but It seems like I already pay way too much for internet access, so
paying for another service is not in my cards.

I can live without seeing the alt.binaries, anyway.  It is bad when you are
working an air show, doing something and hear a P-51 doing a fly-by or
take-off, and say to your buddy, "Oh, it's just another Mustang", without
even looking up!
