I had a crash and and upon inspction I found a small crack at the top
of the carb srew mounting hole. The crack extends from the 12 o'clock
position at the top of the screw hole to the top of the carb stem
(about an eighth inch). It is completely thru the stem wall. Is it
junk or will it still run reasonably well?

If the carb will stay securely mounted where it
belongs, give the engine a test run.

I'm betting it will run OK.

You could seal the crack with JB weld.  If it
really is small crack, it should hold up OK.

I strongly second the JB Weld recommendation.  Clean it super clean with
acetone, and then put a big blob of JB Weld on it, and squeeze it into the
crack, and some extra over the top of the crack, and onto the surrounding
metal.  You might need to tap the hole again, but that will be a good thing,
to tighten up the set screw in the hole, so it does not vibrate loose.

My bet is the crack will outlast the engine, with a good blob on it.

JB Weld ranks right above sliced bread when it comes to fixing engines,
IMHO.  <g>

I have no affiliation with JB Weld, ....bla - bla - bla, ect.

So...
Explain how you fix engines with a slice of bread.
I third the JB Weld and I would rough up the area around the crack just a
bit.

Agreed.

Yup.

I JB-welded a broken carb into a broken crankcase of
a Thunder Tiger .36 about five or six years ago.

It's still flying.

Me neither--worse the luck!
