Repowering the Lima 38

My Lima 38 runs like a real shitbox and I want to repower it. Anyone done
this? I thought of using two spuds or black beetles on the tender bogies but
I don't think they are powerful enough to tow a decent train. My layout
doesn't have any grades so maybe it would work?

Thanks in advance for any comments/ideas.

When I finally get them, I plan to re-motor my Lima 38 with a "flat can"
motor from Graham Rooke's ModelTorque company.
From what  he showed me at the Box Hill exhibition, you undo the motor case,
remove and discard the original armature and circular magnet and with the
aid of supplied bracket, mount this (hopefully) quality motor in its place.
You have to transfer to the new motor the small driving gear on the armature
shaft.
Anyone already done this conversion to their Lima locos? For doing diesels
with 3 axle bogies, the  kit also includes replacement wheelsets which dont
have tyres and  new 3- axle pick-ups to improve elec contact.
Still waiting for my order to arrive.

And of course, dont forget to replace the incorrect Lima tender with a
correct Lloyd's tender kit  which will have to be assembled and painted to
match....I think a nice motor will do me till Werris  or Traimorama do a
plastic r-t-r 38.
