i have recently learned you can buy decal paper to suit your printer. i
haven't yet tried it out but others have said it is ok.

on the tri-ang e-group we have been discussing this issue extensively and
conclude that quality is a major consideration, as is the need for white ink
for a bunch of applications. I have successfully created one nameplate for a
British steam Black 5MT using Photoshop (I am a graphic designer), A Canon
i965 Printer and High Resolution paper.
There's a range of small firms that make decals, but it depends what you
need and what profile you're modelling. I was at Trainworld the other day
and saw a lot of decal kits for Australian profile gear.
