Spent the day up at the gliding club, took heli to play with too.
It was absolutely glorius.
+8 Deg C
almost no wind
snow on the deck but not too thick
put another gallon through.
Halfway through Ian (the only man I know who buys kits and produces planes
as opposed to the others who buy planes and produce kits)
Mutters the immortal line from the peanut gallery "Can you loop it?"
"Erm, I don't have idle up set up, I've never done one before, I'ts a new
setup on the tail, excuse, excuse yada, yada, yada"
To which he replies, "Come on you poof, loop it!"
Oh well, I haven't crashed it yet, it's gonna happen sometime thinks I.
Blooter it down the field, pull up in to a stall turn.
Blooter it back down the field the other way 20' off the deck doing mach god
knows what pull up into monster stall turn intending to carry on over the
top rather than turn it. Bottle failed, do stall turn.
Blooter it back down the field the other way 20' off the deck doing mach god
knows what pull up into monster stall turn intending to carry on over the
top rather than turn it. Bottle failed, do stall turn.
At which point the peanut gallery starts a chant of "Poof, poof, poof"
The wee rappy is screaming down the park 25' up, pull up so it's going
verticle, neutralise the collective, pull back all the way on the cyclic, a
little negative on the collective AND IT'S THROUGH ! woo hoo !
Back to a hover beside me, bow for the crowd. "Do it again! " they yell.
oh well, nothing ventured.
rattle a bit up behind me, wee stall turn, back down the park towards the
peanut gallery with nothing like the speed it had on last time. Pull up,
netralise collective, Think "bugger me that hasn't gone very high" pull back
on cyclic think "hmm need full negative collective, just like on the sim"
bottom the collective, the engine goes to idle, the headspeed starts to
decay at a horrible rate of knots, the heli yaws all over the place, seems
to be more upright than upside down at about 15' off the deck, give it full
positive collective, it shoots of sideways, luck rather than pilot skill
brings it back to a hover beside me.
Land heli.
shut down engine.
walk into gliding club.
Open bar.
After a swift nip, I decided to go back out and switch off the heli and
tranny.
Was a bloody good day.
Didn't bend anything, had a good laugh.
Had a heart rate approaching the heli headspeed at times, and thououghly
enjoyed myself.
I have a sneaking suspicion that I'm going to get at least idle up 1 set up
before I get a governor.
I also have a sneaking suspicion that I'm gonna need a crash kit soon.
Thanks for all the help I've had from you guys so far.
Regards
Roy

Great story Roy. It almost sounds like you were flying at my club. Taunts
& jibes are always the order of the day and there's nothing funnier than
coaxing somebody into a maneuver which ends in disaster :-))

Sorry to post this in the wrong order but I accidentally erased Roy's
original post.
Last Friday after my first brief experience with idle up I did 3
flips.(showing off for friend) Just like the sim, pump the collective stick
back and then forth again. Then I started flying around fast in idle up
mode. Coming around in a fast descending left turn I flew it sideways right
into the ground at way high speed. It totaled everything but the radio gear
and a few odd parts.(engine went to full throttle and threw the rod) I just
recieved my new Caliber 30 ARF w OS30 SX-H but won't have time to assemble
for a while:(
I think I may have gotten used to associating my rotor's lift with the sound
of the engine by doing all of my flying in hover mode. I think I just pulled
back a bit to far on the collective trying to lose altitude while coming
into that turn and by the time I put in full up it was to late.(can't
remember if I tried to tilt the rotor to the right at the same time as that
might have helped)
Do advanced pilots fly around in idle up?

If I find myself just doing circuits I've seen myself leaving it in normal
mode, which sometimes gets interesting if its windy coming down out of the
circuit and its almost an auto before its back on the deck. If I'm doing
loops and stall turns then I leave it flight mode 1 (idle1) which has a
slightly different gyro setting and a higher head speed and no chance of the
throttle closing when bottoming the collective in stall turn into a gale:-)
And its less stressful to land in idle 1, than it its to loop in normal
mode:-) less bicycle clips are required for that one:-)

Not that I'm an advanced pilot but I only ever fly in idle up - I only use
normal for spooling up. I don't see what my heli could do in normal mode
that it can't do in idle up so I just leave it there and fly! If I feel
like a bit o' 3d, I just wiggle the sticks - no need to fart about with
switches ;-)

And that's one of the best reasons for doing everythng in idle up. I've made
the mistake of doing a loverley low level forward flip to an inverted hover
with a pals X-cell only to discover that it wasn't in idle up. Made for a
VERY interesting flip back to legs down. I was as impressed as hell that an
X-cell can forward flip from inverted to legs down with rotor speed of minus
4:-)
Fortunately, so was the owner.

Almost every one, particularly if they're into aerobatics. Start up, engage
full thrattle (no typo) wait for gov to take over, (or select Idle up 2 or
3) and away you go.
Land and switch off:-)

There's only one word that's frightening in this hobby, and that's .......
LOWER!!! ;)
