I'm trying to achieve a ratio of around 8.0:1 what size pinion and what size
main gear no I need

what model? your choices of rations are dependent on the gears available for
the model. Some models have a greater range than others.

Assuming the pinion gear is permanently attached to the
motor shaft (fairly common), all you need is a count of the
teeth on the pinion gear.  The main gear must have 8x that
number of teeth and mesh with the pinion.  If you have no
clue about what size the gear needs to be, best take the
motor and go shopping.

Count the number of teeth on your main gear, divide by 8 and there you have
the number of teeth needed on the pinion.

Then all you need to do is find that pinion, which will depend on the make
of the model. the other "way" is to use the original gear and do the sums
backwards.
