You know, I was just thinking exactly the same thing. I have just watched
the 3d masters video, and I was impressed with the flying, but I thought
their landings were terrible really. Maybe they're used to trashing their
heli's so it doesn't matter to them... or whatever. :)

Dump isn't the word, most of the time it is out of the end of a n auto.
besides landing is just a controlled crash ;-)

Or maybe getting the points for completing the flight in EXACTLY the right
number of seconds is more important than a featherlight (tm) landing. Lots
of the 3D Masters stuff was done to music and the idea was to land as the
last note died away, so that silence prevailed all about. (That makes 'em
auto's too)
Also there's the fact that most of the auto landings we see these guys doing
are being stttrrrrettchedd to the limit of lift just so the heli reaches the
exact spot they're looking for. Again, the position is more important than
the actual landing.

Every crash you walk away from is a landing :-)))

I think, generally speaking, that 3D pilots are so into throwing the controls
all over the place, doing whatever it is they're doing, that they're not into
the mind set needed to do a really soft touchdown.
Having said that, I've watched the top guys, Jason Kraus, Curtis Youngblood,
etc. and I've seen them do consistantly smooth landings, both powered and
unpowered. For the "average" 3D'r though, I think my first paragraph applies.
Then again, we all plop um down from time to time. I have days I can't seem to
set one down lightly no matter what I do. Fortunately, our models are pretty
tough.

Having a V throttle/pitch curve won't help either. Because the control is
limited to only one half of the stick movement, any small movement of the stick
may cause quite a big movement in the pitch of the blades. It doesn't show up
very much when flying, but will do when landing..

I reckon it's cause they don't give a f**k and they know the realities of
what breaks and how. You find it in all sorts.. people sometimes say things
like 'god you're not gentle with that computer are you' to computer people
when they chuck things about or whack away on a keyboard really heavily.

Tried the one on sunday where they touch the ground with the skids between a
manourver then spring up off the ground to another manouver . First try , 1
set of stripped tail gears on a raptor 60,heli climbs piroeting as i have
lost the tail ..hit throttle hold on way up and do a piro auto only to break
skids...All the field laughed out loud , next time i'll go a little bit
easier on the initial touch down.....
got to progress somehow..
Cheers
