Have any of you experiences with the simulator CSM
(http://www.rcmodels.org/csm/)? I don't care about fancy graphics - what I
do care about is "close to real life simulation".

What would you recommend?

I taught my self to fly totally on the CSMv1 sim.

I have just bought, second hand mind, the CSM v10 so I can practice the
inverted lowlevel stuff that has recently cost me!!

I also just read the review of G2 in RC heli world - the thought of paying
that much so I can fly a simulated huey in a school gym, in formation whilst
being grinned at by a hundred inbred bovines chills me!  Yuk!

The physics is what you want to pay for

I'd recommend you look further down this here list and see about getting the
G2 that's being offered for 60 quid, that's what I'd recommend:-))

Reflex is IMO the best.  Try them all and buy the one you feel is the best.
This is how I decided to purchase Reflex.  I didn't like G2 - too 'gamey' if
you know what I mean though many people swear it's the mutt's hangy bits.

I totally agree. The reason G2 is so so popular and everyone swares by it is
down to one thing:

MARKETING

Reflex is starting to be more widely available. once this happens more
people will see the difference between the two. There was a thread on
RunRyder which was a wish list for what people want in the next version of
realflight. They were all available now in Reflex. And half the price.

You also download extra models instead of having to buy them on cd rom

Hardly. RealFlight's first "efforts" resulted in that sim being panned by
everyone and his dog, and their customer feedback was total crap. Promises
were made and not fullfilled and people were leaving their sims untouched.
EVENTUALLY a patch came out for the original RF and things took a step
forwards, but it still wasn't "right".

Then G2 was released to MUCH amusement and sniggering, but...... G2 was in a
different league and BECAUSE it was now a superior sim, it got to where it
is now, the number one. Not marketing at all, it got their DESPITE it's
marketing. In fact, if their "marketing" guys were in MY employ, they'd have
been looking for alternative employment LONG ago:-)

Is it availble in the USA?

AeroFly also had lots of available models on-line for free. People could actually make their own
models and textures so there were many user sites with free models.

You could also go in and paint a sim heli to match your own real model. I still think this is
the best way to use a sim.

It also provided a true 3D world to fly around in.

I would have stayed with AeroFly if they had not treated their users so badly and delayed the
upgrade for well over a year. By the time G2 came out, I was so fed up with AeroFly's false
promises that I jumped ship and never looked back.

CSM is junk and always has been. It was only a viable sim back when only junk was available.
Much is said about 'realistic' physics, but in my opinion, it is far too easy to fly,
particularly for autorotation. I think it would be more accurate to say the physics were very
basic and therefore easier to implement. When later sims incorporated complex calculations on
many new parameters, it took a while to get it right. The result, again in my opinion, is far
out of CSM's league.

It is distributed in the US by

Many of the model on the Reflex site is actually created by the users. Some
of them are pretty sweet. Check out the Dauphin. I think it is also
compatible with models from one of the other sims (maybe it was aerofly).
They are now sellling a model construction program, which for some reason is
free for US residents (how unfair is that!!).
