Please forgive my stupidity but in helicopters does the pilot sit in the
left or right seat?

Cheers,
           Dan (not very bright)

Usually front left.

Mmm, not in the UK - the pilot in charge sits in the right seat (when viewed
from inside the cabin)!

Again in the UK the PIC sits in the left seat of a fixed wing aircraft.

I am currently taking lessons in a Robinson R22 and the Pilot sits on
the left.  I have been in several Helis, Robinson R22 Beta, Robinson
R22 Alpha, Robinson R44 and a few Black Hawks in the Military.  In each
of these the pilot was always sitting in the left seat.

I have had on instance during a lesson where the trainer sat on the
right and I got the left for my flight.

As a trainee you will sit on the right and you will stay in that seat until
and if you start instructing. You in the right seat are the pilot under
training.

If you take a passenger they will sit in the left seat and you will remove
their controls so they can't try and fly as well.

Or..... maybe I have been flying the R22 from the wrong seat for the past
five years!!

I have a Sporty's video called "So you want to fly helicopters" or something
like that.
In the video, the student pilot is in the left seat and the instructor is in
the right.  The
instruction is being performed in the US and the instruction is in an R22.

However ... (big pause)

When I load the Robinson model into MS Flight Simulator, it places your
(pilot) view
in the right seat (center console to the left of the view).

So, go figure..

That's why I said "usually" :) I didn't know that the UK had the pilots
generally on the right though.

Depends entirley on the manufacturer. Two examples if you will. Bell
machines have the PIC on the right and Hughes/Schwiezer have him on the
left.

Just came out of a Sikorsky S76 and the PIC was on the right (viewed from
inside).  Can't really recall but i believe the Super Puma was piloted from
the right as well, and the Bell piloted from the left.

Depends entirely on the manufacturer.

Robinson R-22 can be flown from either seat, but must be operated from
the RIGHT seat for solo flight.

It is in fact a legal requirement, for an R-22 to meet the airworthiness
requirements, for the left (removeable) cyclic to say "Solo from right
seat only".

Basically, you cannot let go of the cyclic in flight, but you can get
away with letting go of the collective.  As the cyclic is in your right
hand, this means your left hand is more free to operate the controls.
Therefore, it is preferable for a manufacturer to place the solo pilot
on the right.

I fly R-22, and AS341 (Gazelle), and the pilot sits on the right.  When
I fly the gazelle with it's owner, he sits on the right and I fly from
the left.

Hope that helps.

Colin
