Goldies Gold Plating - 18 Oct 2005 12:37 GMT
I just bought an original Real Flight Simulator with Futaba Dummy
Transmitter that has a 15-Pin Cable (Serial??) and my PC is a newer one with
NO input for this cable. I also have a Wingman Extreme JOYSTICK with the
same cable but IT came with a short 15Pin to USB adaptor cable. Can I use
THIS adaptor to plug in the Futaba Dummy Tx into a USB port on my PC? I
tried but computer won't "see" the Tx.  Tx works FINE on another OLDER PC
running WIN ME but IT has the proper joystick input.

WHAT CAN I DO and more importantly..... HOW can I DO IT?

Thanks for ANY help.

I also just found out this program has NO helicopters!!! Is there a way to
add heli's to it?

Thanks Freddy

I've seen a number of devices lately that had a serial type connection that
plugged into a USB adapter and then to a USB port on the computer.  I don't
know if this would work on the original Real Flight or not.

One way to make it work for sure is to, assuming you've got a free expansion
slot, simply install a COM port to your computer.  The port itself should be
dirt cheap to buy, probably less then $20.  It would be kind of like adding
a 3.5" floppy drive and it would eliminate any worry about compatibility
issues trying to make a serial to USB adapter work on a program that was
written before USB was around much.  At least I think it was written before
USB was around much!  ;-)

Good luck,
Steve R.

That 15 pin connector is NOT serial.  It's for a game port.  *IF* you
have an ISA slot, you can pick up a gameport card and connect the Tx
to that.  If not, you can buy a cheap soundcard with a gameport/MIDI
port on it, disable the sound and use that.  (This is how I got G2
working on my machine since I also have the DB15 connector)

The USB to gameport adapters available *MIGHT* work for that
application but my experiences with them have been disappointing to
say the least.

Unknown.  Check the RealFlight website for updates and addons that
might have helicopters.

Keyspan makes an adapter for this, but I think you'd be better off just
getting RealFlight G3, it runs GREAT on XP and has several helicopters
of all sizes. (Including Electric) Good LucK!

The 15 pin (male ?) is probably a joystick interface. If your PC does not
have it on the back than this is because nowadays all joysticks are USB.

BUT your PC very likely DOES have an interface for old joysticks but the
connector internally in your PC (there are a LOT of them) is just NOT fed to
a connector on the back of the PC because it is unlikely anyone needs
it...... With the stuff for your PC there may be a connector for the back
side though
It is best to get your PC to your dealer and ask them to make a joystick
connector on the back. I am 100% sure the functionality is already present
in your PC

Thanks for all the help guys. This remains the BEST news forum I'm
subscribed to. I'd BUY G3 if it were $50-$100 like it SHOULD be but Great
Planes doesn't see it that way!
Anyway, here's what I did and it works BEAUTIFUL! For less than $20.00,
Radio Shack sells a USB Gameport Adapter part # 26-164. Set on the #4
"wheel-setting" it lets the dummy Futaba Tx work like a champ!
Now for some shameless "begging". Anyone care to "loan" me a copy of an
add-on disc that has some heli's???

If you're going to eventually get another sim, get Reflex XTR instead.
Better graphics and (IMO) better physics too. A lot of aftermarket models to
choose from too.
