NiMh Battery Pack  SMART-Chargers

Hey people.

I have a mini helicopter that takes those little 8.4v 700mah packs.
The Heli, controller, packs and charger came as a set, though I do not
trust the battery charger as it is a 2 hour one and I fear that
overcharging may result in damage to the battery. The charger is simply
a 12v 300mA power pack with a female RC power plug on the lead.

Can anyone suggest a smart charger takes good care of my packs? I don't
want to force raw power into them, and I don't want to fry an egg on
them either.

I hear that there are some smart and/or microprocessor based chargers
out there that can cycle a battery and keep it on a trickle charge when
it's finished.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Tons of decent chargers out there.  I personally like the Great Planes
Triton charger ($120 or so) and use it for NiCd, NiMh, LiPo, LiIon and
sealed lead/acis batteries...

Lots of folks have had good thigs to say about the Multiplex
Multicharger ($100 or so) as well.

You'll probably need to make up or buy charge cords with the proper
connectors on 'em whichever way you go.

I can personally vouch for the Triton.....it's a great charger.
I use it for my LiPo pack on my Blade CP and on my NiCd and NiMh for my
cars.
The best part is it has a memory built in so you can pre-program it for up
to 10 (I think) different battery packs.

I have two very minor complaints with the Triton.  1st is that it's
12V DC powered so charging at home requires a power supply.

2, the "beeps" are piercingly loud when you mash buttons..  Really
sucks 'cuz I'm a night owl and tend to do a lot of charging after kids
and wife are in bed and the beeps can be heard anywhere in the house
when I'm out in the shop.  Soon as the warranty is done, I'm opening
the thing up and replacing the beeper with one at a lower frequency or
muffling the one that's in there..  :)

You are right there are quite a few chargers that will fill the bill. I
happen to use the Accu-Cycle Elite and am very happy with it. It will peak
charge NICAD,NIMH and LIPO batteries. You can charge two at a time and you
can adjust pretty much any parameter to meet your needs or just let the
charger come up with the charge rate etc. on it's own. It also functions as
a discharger and cycler.
