Hello could some one please help I having trouble with the frame rate on my
Reflex xtr sim, it starts around 39 40 but quickly drops to 19 and sometimes
less than that the system I'm running is Athlon 2700+ 512 ram 2.16 Ghz  and
a Nvidia Gforce FX5200 graphics.

Regards

Rob

I'm running the Athlon 2600+, 1024 ram and a 128 mb FX5200.  I've also
installed some name brand cooling fans on both my video card and cpu, which
helps when your playing the Sims for several hours but I still find it hard
to get a decent frame rate with most flight Sims, specially when there's
smoke or clouds (less than 15fps).

Turning off or down most of the graphics will usually improve the frame rate
but I think the old FX5200 is the let down.  I have tried a friends 64 mb
ATI video card and things certainly improved.  I have also found the old
original video drivers that came with the card improve frame rate.

Both Richard and RA should look at upgrading to a GeForce 6600 series or
higher video card.  They're not terribly expensive anymore and it would
result in dramatically improved performance.

On my 17" MacBook Pro (2 GHz Intel Core Duo, ATI Mobility Radeon X1600)
running Windwows (through BootCamp) I do get more than 40, but if the
battery nears being empty, it will slow down for the last few minutes.
Could this be the reason (or heat)?

This is because the most mobile processors have the ability to change there
clock speed dynamicly  to conserve power.

For example if you are only running some basic programs that only require
50% of your CPU capability then the processor clock will be automatically
reduced so that the CPU only runs as fast as it needs too, thereby
conserving power.

The converse happens when the battery is getting low.  The system might slow
the CPU clock speed to reduce power at the sacrifice of performance - I
guess the rationale is that it is better to complete the task more slowly
then have the batteries fail part way through.

There is usually a setting (either in BIOS or in OS Power Savings) to
disable this function - unfortunately I don't know Macs so can't tell you
exactly what to change.

Cheers,

Nigel
