Really just the benefits you first mentioned.
Actually tends to make the heli less stable because ....
(a) adds quite a bit of weight
(b) tends to resonate and set the heli vibrating
Once you you get the nerve to remove it, the heli feels so much nicer.

That's the real reason. Reducing the risk of the rotor blades touching
the ground.

The model with training gear is configured to be as easy as possible
to handle for a beginner. There is a multitude of parameters that
affect how the model handles.
