.. or are these cheap little electric helicopters, like the blade cp,
absolutely ruining the possibility of future glow/gas powered r/c pilots?

I don't think so.  Models like the Blade CP are great for introducing folks
to the world of RC  rotorcraft in a way that doesn't cost them an arm and a
leg and is relatively easy to fly without having to find someone more
experienced to help.  I've generally found that if the person is interested
enough in model helicopters, they'll transition to the IC powered, or
equivelant electric powered versions quickly enough.  If they're not, they
they won't be around for long anyway.

Well, I feel a little better now.

The only reason I'm raising the question is that I've met 4 people now
who've said they won't get into helis after buying and attempting to fly
little electrics like the blade, axe, venom, etc. knockoffs..

When I told them that a 30 size heli is way easier to fly, they seemed
skeptical.

Yeah, I guess its good in a way, because if you can fly one of the
little leccys, then you'll be more than ready to fly a big one, and
you'll save money with less crashes.

I've been buddy boxing three guys this past year.  One of them, Paul, has a
friend who's been playing around with the micro electrics and can fly them
Ok for the most part but it's only hovering and he's crashed a lot.  Paul
asked me to let his friend fly the Raptor on our buddy box setup.  The guy
picked it up into a stable hover and just sat there.  Then he moved it
around in a very controlled manner.  I was impressed.  So was he!  He said
he had no idea that a model helicopter could that stable.

I've always been very impressed with the flight qualities of the T-Rex and
it's copy-cat brothers but they're still very small helicopters and that
makes them twitchy to fly even when they're setup relatively softly.
There's just no comparison to a well setup (30 or larger) glo or electric
powered model.

I buddy boxed a guy a few years ago, and I lost an aircraft.  And, this
was on a slow moving trainer airplane.

I'm not much for teaching new pilots since then.  I'd like to see a
video of someone buddy-boxing a new pilot on one of those cheap electric
helis..

OTOH, I'm about ready to start teaching new plane pilots again.  As for
helis, it's gonne be a while for me, and it'll be strictly glow powered
.30 or above.

Buddy boxing a heli student is a LOT different from doing the same with a
fixed wing student.  Overall, I think I've had pretty good luck keeping them
out of trouble but I've not been 100% successful in preventing a crash and I
make it "totally" clear to the first timers and I can do them a lot of good
but can't make any guarantees.

I'm not sure I'd bother with the cheap electrics.  They're either of a type
that fly indoor only and don't need the help, or they're too small and
unforgiving to be worth the trouble outside.  Anything from a 30 size on up
works well and I get to fly it first to see how it's setup.  Anything "I"
don't like gets changed before we start.

The process is actually pretty simple.  Once both transmitters are matched
so I can switch from one to the other without any undue control jumps.  We
set the model on the ground in front of us,  confirm that the students
throttle is at idle position, I flip and hold the trainer switch and the
student spools up the rotor and attempts a lift off.  At this point with a
brand new student I'm VERY conservative with what I'll let them do simply
because the model is so close to the ground that I've got "no" time to catch
it if they screw up.  So far, that hasn't been that big a deal.  Actually,
the guy I've had the most trouble with is the most experienced fixed wing
pilot I've worked with.  He has a BAD habit of landing and then pulling full
up elevator.  It works great on airplanes and is totally lousy to do with
helicopters.  The model is still close to full flight rpm and tilts back
until the vertical fin hits the ground and the boom strike follows shortly
thereafter and it happens so quickly that I don't stand a chance of catching
it.  He's done that a couple of times now.  :-/

Other than that, it's been a very fun and fulfilling experience.

One of the reasons I wouldn't let anyone use any of my sims before they'd
bought a real heli. Once they'd bought one, no problem, they could use my
sims for as long as they lied, but I've seen too many people put off "real"
RC heli flying by sims. Those who don't get into the real RC flying don't
know what they're missing, so I tried to keep their interes high enough to
spend the cash first (and not with me btw).

These people then tend to stick with the hobby and THAT'S good.

But the little leccy jobs get too boring too quickly and unless you get the
timing right, the leccy buyers don't transition to the gassers or glo
powered machines.

I assume by "little" you're referring to the 300 sized micros like the
Blade CP etc...  I can see how just hovering around would get boring
pretty quickly, but hey can still be fun on a calm morning out in the
yard.  I love terrorizing my daughter's cats in the living room with
mine.  :)

Try flying the AXE CP...it's not at all a toy or simple to fly...

Why when I've got 2 Trex 450s, a Trex 600 and a Raptor 50 to fly?

And the slimey mess to clean up...been there, done that!

Only "slimey mess" is the Raptor, it's it's not bad at all.

Since you're so enamored with your Axe, wanna buy my Blade CP?
Brushless power, BH head, alum swash, alum CNC frame/boom/tailmotor
mount, DD tail.  Flies good, but not nearly as well as my 450s and
nowhere even close to how the 600 flies..

They're fine for animal antics (I have a PicoZ for that), but other than
that, I ant noise, I want the things to stink and sting my eyes and I want

I flew the snot outta my PicooZ last night..  Must've pissed away a
couple hours of airtime...

You want noise?  You want stink?  You want your eyes to sting and you
want expense?

Have a kid.  They never shut up, their diapers stink and the diaper
pail will make your eyes sting and I won't even BEGIN to delve into
the expense aspects..  :)

A bit addictive aren't they? :-)

'Course I do, I'm a boke.

Been there, not going back. And I used disposable crap catchers too, so no
diaper pail to breathe the fumes of.

Yep.  I'm getting pretty good at landing on sleeping cats too..  :)

Of course, testosterone-boy....

We used disposables as well, but the pail they went into always stunk
to high-heaven.  The day my son mastered the grunt-sculpture on the
toilet I tossed that sh.t bucket in the garbage and poured myself 4
fingers of 20 year old Scotch to celebrate.  :)

I never went near any sh.t when my son was a midget. I had (have) a wife for
that sort of stuff.

No Marco, it's not just you. I reckon they've f.cked up the hobby totally
and completely.
