Just got the thing to hover nicely when smoke started pouring from the speed
controller, melting it and the battery and 'welding' the connector together,
so's I couldn't get even to power it off without cutting the leads at the
battery end....need a new Spedd controller and a new battery, of course....

Is this a known problem with this model ?

I've had the Honey Bee FP, the Honey Bee King ONE and now the Belt-CP.
Never had any problems with any of them.

What I always recommend if bought as a RTF kit is to carefully check all
connections, screws, etc. ESKY helis are OK, but the low cost has to be
made up somewhere - usually in quality or the build. My Belt-CP had a
couple of loose connections - put it down to happening in transit from
Hong Kong.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take.....
but by the moments that take our breath away.

I had a honey bee 2 CP and it burned out a transistor causing it to
apply full power, so I had to land on full power and grab the helicopter
and pull the battery whilst at going at full tilt which was a bit scary
indoors in the kitchen, and SWMBO went mad and banned to flying out side

I can't help you with your problem, but I can at least show you that
you are not the only one:

My ESC is a Futaba s3004 servo: $13 US
Motor is an OS32SX-H Engine: $114 US

Both are about to have their 5'th birthday.  At around ~90 flights at
~15 minutes each.  22 hours total flight time, and they run perfectly.

.. If I'm starting to piss people off, let me know.  I can gradually
learn to respect new religions.  :)

I think you might have some difficulty fitting them to a HoneyBee.
