Does anyone know of a shaft tail rotor drive upgrade for a Trex 450. I have
had the belt snap for the second time in about 6 months. It makes for a
terrible landing. I don't mind the cost of the part's it is just such a pain
to get the wreck back to the preferred setup before the crash.

You're probably better off having a spare belt in your box and changing it
at intervals timed to perfection.

I have a few spares but it is a real pain to change, it takes about an hour.
You have to disassemble just about the entire helicopter from the connection
of the boom. I always look at the belt and it looks fine. Any suggestions on
how many hours of flying would be a reasonable time to replace it.

I have yet to break a belt in any of my 450's in several hundred
flights and well over a dozen crashes..  I run 'em on the loose side
and keep 'em lubed with silicone lubricant.  All of mine have the
metal drive pulleys.

A lot of people are taking the top idler out of the tailcase for
better belt life...

By silicone lube do you mean the garden variety silicone spray in a pressure
pack?
Is this pretty much common to all heli's  ie a good idea for a Blade400
also???
Oh yeah and how much how often??

Cheers

I would assume he's talking the spray can variety!

Is it common to all heli's with a belt tail drive?  Not by my experience.
I've never heard of anyone lubing the tail drive belt and I've also found
them to be very stout.  I've never had one break and the only one's I've
seen break were in "very" severe crashes.  I've also never seen anything in
the instructions for the birds I've owned that had tail drive belts about
lubing them in any way.  I would think it would tend to attract dirt and
dust in the long run.  I'm looking forward to hearing "other Kevin's"
response to this!

It was a fairly common practice on the Raptors to stop any "moise"
interfering with the radio's. Same with the all plastic Shuttles.

I've never seen a belt snap either.

I've sprayed many a belt, but not to avoid any issues other than the
interference one I mentioned. AND I'm another Kev too.

Let's try this again. The origional question has anyone ever seen a
conversion kit to change a belt drive tail rotor (Trex 450) to a Shaft
drive. Amaising how this thread went astray.

No and that's probably why it went astray
I have one of the an first ccpm XL450 its been decked twice but its
still on its first belt and AFAIK its not a common problem to snap them

My middle name is Kevin  :)

Well my name (or middle name) isn't Kevin and I'm pretty certain that Ronald
(the Dutch outrunner motor guy) isn't a Kevin either. Still it seems the
Kev's are taking over the establishment!

We always do, but generally, we keep quiet until it's a total fait accompli.

With silicone, there's only a dry film left once the carrier
evaporates.  No funk on the belt at all.

I don't lube any other points on the heli except for thrust and
one-way bearings and those I use while lithium grease on.

I use food grade silicone lube.  It has no petroleum products in it to
degrade the belt.  I lube every 10-12 flights or so.  As for a "good
idea" or not, that's generated a LOT of debates over the years.

Try it and see if you like it.

An hour playing with an unbroken heli is FAR more fun than two hours
repairing a dead one and then farting about setting it up again.

Well how many hours did your last two belts manage?. Know that and change
the belt five minutes before it fails:-)

I'd probably go for an hour or so shy of "time out" myself though.

It's a bit like the timing belt on a car engine, can snap without warning
leaving a hefty bill.

I have three 450s with over 400 flights between 'em all - over 200 of
those on a heli that's been lawn-darted over a dozen times - and have
*never* broken a belt.

Make sure the belt is running down the center of the pulley (both
ends) and set it up so it's *JUST* tight enough to stop the belt from
slipping.  (Hold the TR and turn the head.  It should take a pretty
good twist to get the belt to skip a tooth.)

Also, this is an arguable point, but I've been lubing my belt with
food grade silcone spray since day 1.  Again, I have NEVER broken (or
even damaged) a belt..

I would if I remembered it.  :)  It comes in a green can and I got it
from W. Grainger Industrial Supply.

Does this advice also apply to larger models, such as 50 size or even
90 size?

That's the way *I* do all of my belt driven helis...  YMMV.
