LiPo question

The Blade 400 I fly has a shutdown feature for when the battery
runs too low.

Simple question, is it good/bad for the battery to run it to
that point? Or should I stop much sooner?

As even the manual advises not to use the limiter feature and people in
web-based boards also say so, I'd say better stop sooner.

As a flyer that has puffed many LiPos I would say do not use the automatic
limiter.
Get a cheap loud kitchen timer and you will be fine.

You set it for the time that you want to allow. How do you know what
time to allow? By the average time it took to poof three packs X 90%.

thats ok if you remember to charge them first :-) (I was being an devils
advocate) this is exactly what I normally do, but I use the built in
timer on my Futaba 9C thats set with the throttle channel and I set it
to go off roughly 90% discharged, I have still puffed packs but I have
carried on using them and they seem fine

so to find the correct time you have to poof 3 packs.  Thats going to
get very expensive. There must be a better way ?

fly for 2 mins, charge the pack see how much it discharged then work out
how many minutes to discharge the pack then set the timer at 90% of that
time

Get a charger that can display how many mah it takes to recharge the
pack fully.

Fully charge a pack and fly for 3-4 minutes.

Recharge and note the mah required to recharge.  Figure out the
mah/minute discharge rate and adjust the flight time from there.

For good pack longevity, set the flight time so you don't exceed 80%
of the pack's capacity.

For example, if the pack is 2000mah, the most you want to put back is
1600mah when you recharge (2000mah * 0.80 = 1600mah)

Those are all well and good, but maybe the guy is a newbie and doesn't have
the cash for a good charger?
Just use the the 4.5mins timer on the radio initially.... especially as the
stock 1800mah pack is not the best

Noob? yes. Cashless? no.

However, I don't fly enough to justify an expensive charger. I have
too many hobbies as it is.

But what I've done is fly my batteries to the limit using the
timer, and now only fly 80% of that.

So on the two batteries I've got, that gives me 7 and 10.5 minutes
for the flying I do.

Not a real good way to maintain your packs...

Good luck getting any longevity out of your packs.

How many flights do you get out of your batteries before
they die of "old age"?

Most of the LiPos that die at our club old age is the least of the
problems hitting the ground normally kills them :-) and judging by the
shape of a pack from a 600 t-rex that fell 100 or so feet they dont seem
to burst into flames now either
I have had some a year that I use in a T-rex and a Zagi that I have lost
count on the number of flights, and one has been puffy for months and
its still going strong

Depends on their care and feeding and the quality of the pack from the
get-go.

I have 6 Thunder Power 3S packs that are over 2 years old and each one
of 'em has over 150 cycles on 'em.  Yeah, they're getting a bit tired,
but they still work.

I have 2 6S Flightpower packs with about 100 cycles each that are
still going strong.

I also have AirThunder 6S and 3S packs and a couple of Outrage 6S
packs for my Trex 500 that will get the same treatment as all my other
packs and I anticipate long lives out of them as well.
