Jasper - 21 Apr 2004 17:57 GMT Are there any computer based sims of RC cars that use a plugin controller, something like RealFlight but for cars, Ive seen a few game type ones and some old fake 3d things but nothing that you can buy? Is there anything?

"over 120 features to customize for your car.." (or something like that) According to the wife, I spend too much time working on my "real" r/c cars as it is!
Forgot this one, it's called Re-Volt. I used to play it all the time. It's more candyish looking, but all the cars in it can be modified by editiing a text file and with a little time, you can make custom skins for the cars. It does have things like rockets and oil slicks you can attack other vehicles with, but I suspect it's not really what you are looking for, but it's out there as a suggestion. Forgot, you can also make your own tracks, which I found most appealing about it.. http://www.re-volt.com/

I asked two German guys that made some of the best skins if they could make me a Lancia Stratos and they made a street version and a rally version for me. Since I'm a complete idiot for all things Stratos-related, they are forever in my debt:

BTW- there are a few skins of real R/C cars out there- they're also pretty cool. Plus, most of the custom tracks do away with the goofy rockets and oil slicks, etc.
Oh, there's a newer game that is incredibly fun to play- even if the vehicles are kinda goofy. Here's a link for the demo:

It's hard to describe, but trust me- this game really feels realistic. It's a little juvenile at times- makes R/Cers out to be little hooligans- but I guess that's true to a certain extent!
(LOL)

I'm curious as to how well it translates to the actual running of R/C cars.
It's been out for quite a while, too- is a graphics engine update on the way?
I'd love it if there was a realistic game that lets you use an actual controller. (maybe I should shut up and check out the link, huh?)
I'd play on rainy days!

They will be releasing a USB adapter that you can plug your RC transmitter into. You can play it with your real radio that way ;-)

Jasper - 28 Apr 2004 00:40 GMT Wow that sure looks more like, are those cars real or is that what they look like. Is it a serious simulation or more a game type thing, it looks serious?

This is a totally serious simulation. I work a lot with the Michael Salven and Rene Cornella, the engineers at a big time RC car company on making this as true to life as we can possibly make it. We use the actual design data from their Pro-Engineer software, so all of the inertias of the cars and so on are exactly the same as in real life. The suspension is fully modelled including dynamic roll centers that move around and cause jacking effects. Gyro effects from the wheels are modelled, and engine torque acts to twist the chassis.
The entire drivetrain with all the pulleys and shafts, one-ways, diffs, (or whatever you decide to run), are modelled with a sophisticated rotational constraint system that guarantees even the angular momentum changes upon engagement are correct at every rotating part on the car.
I've also got a wealth of telemetry info from them that I use to compare performance with. We spend a lot of time working on the handling. I'm confident this will be the most realistic on-road RC racing sim ever released.

Neat. I hope I don't need a quad Xeon system to run it :-)

Jasper - 21 Apr 2004 23:32 GMT Has anyone got the Vritual RC game port controller gizmo? Is it any good, and the software that comes with it is that any good, looks a little outdated but if it drives well could be what Iam looking for. http://www.pantronics.de/vrc.html

I have 1080 files relating to the Lancia Stratos on my computer. 80MB in total...
I've been a fan since they were first manufactured. Maybe someday I'll be able to afford a replica of one that is as well done as the Hawk cars are.

BDM - 24 Apr 2004 01:47 GMT Here's a free version that's quite good. You can use a regular transmitter with a trainer port with the appropriate cable. I see these on E-Bay all the time.
