T-Max Run In

Hi Gang,

I'm running in a T-Maxx and the engine is doing the strangest thing. I'm
following the T-Maxx manual as best I can. I'm into the 5th tank. I have the
engine at 4 turns on the HSN as specified in the book. There is copious
(HEAPS) of blue smoke. At partial (half or better) throttle the engine has
that rich, bogged down feeling, which is fair enough. But at full throttle
it has that lean "Sagging" feeling to it, but still with loads of smoke..
Additionally it feels VERY hot and is blowing plugs like crazy. Uneven
idling and flaming out after each top speed run.

The book warns about strange run in behaviour, but this seems a little over
the top - there are symptoms of both rich AND lean, all in the one setting.
My only departure from the book is that I'm running 25% fuel. I tried 4.5
turns on the HSN with not much difference.

Any suggestions?

Sounds unusual; you'll want to call 888-TRAXXAS after the holiday.

Best case scenario would be a loose cooling head bolt or exhaust manifold
bolt working loose, causing a massive loss of compression and/or fuel
pressure.  Snug the bolts and retry.

Middle scenario would be busted carb or fuel tank causing air leak.

The worst case scenario I can imagine is that part of the piston skirt
broke off and is bouncing around, the sharpnel knocking out the GP
filaments.  The good news is that kind of thing would prolly be a good
candidate for wty service.

Higher nitro % really will require richening, though I'd imagine the
4.5to on the HSN would have been sufficient.  Never tried 25 in a
T-Maxx.

Well,

After a further play with the truck I have found that I was too lean on the
HSN. I am now running it in with just over 5 (yes five!) turns on the HSN
and the thing is blowing smoke, running consistently, accelerating
sluggishly, idling OK (ish) and not blowing plugs anymore. In other words,
pretty much like it should at this stage of its life.

I suppose I should have tried this to start with, but 5 turns just seems
ridiculous, but there you are, it seems to work. I guess our weather down
here in Australia is something outside the scope of the Traxxas manuals.

So now I can proceed with the rest of the break in. Just hope I haven't
over-cooked the poor thing already ....

Thats something that left me scratching my head a few times. Lean HSN and rich LSN. Idles
fine w lotsa smoke, bogs & stalls at any application of throttle. Made me nuts. Wasnt on
the tmaxx though - that was dialed in perfect from the factory. Sorry i didnt read this
sooner, i woulda said something.
Dont sweat the damage done. If its ok now, it'll be fine. Just may not last as long as it
could have. If you Just cant get her to run right, replace the piston & cyl. Not cheap,
but not the end of the world.
