Hi,
I'm currently building up a RC10T4. I've previously built an RC10B4 so I
have a fair idea of what I'm doing. In building the gearbox, I've noticed
that the idler gear shaft is definitely too large outside diameter to fit
through the two bearings. There is totally no way it will fit. So, I spent
about 20 minutes with the shaft in my drill bit, grinding away at it with a
stone, checking for fit every minute so. Eventually I got the bearings to
fit and the 'box assembled OK.
I'm worried now because there is no way my grinding would be as good a fit
as the correct factory parts should have been, although I was as careful as
my equipment allowed.
1. Do you think there is any undue danger of the bearings spinning around
the shaft?
2. Would it matter?
3. Am I risking something heating up and melting?
4. Should I bite the bullet and order a replacement shaft - I'm loath to do
this because delivery would take a couple of weeks here it Australia and of
course I'm super keen to press on!
Grateful for any suggestions!

I don't think you'll get melt. You might get gears inside the gearbox
not meshing corrctly. If you still have access to the B4, Maybe you'd
want to take the gearbox apart from the B4, and get the shaft with it's
bearings in your hands, spin it and compare it to the T4. If they feel
the same don't worry about it.

Order the shaft but still run this one the way it is?

Can't you get some correct diameter bearings that will work with the shaft
you are using?

My guess is he accidentally used the correct bearings in a different part of the
car...

Well that's a reasonably assumption, HOWEVER:
All the parts for this particular step are in one particular bag. It
contains 6 bearings, 4 of which are the same and the other two are twice the
size and would never fit where the idler gear goes.
So, I'm pretty confident I have done it right, and like I said my B4 has the
same gearbox and went together like a charm.
I got an em from Associated this morning and they said that they probably
slipped in the idler shaft from the wrong kit and they will send me another
shaft, which is excellent service I suppose - but of course I'm hot to trot
to finish the kit and I expect it will take a week to get here.
Oh well ....
