I really want to get into Nitro R/C but am on a very limited budget at the
moment. Which do you all think would be the lowest cost alternative. Buying
a boxed kit, or just buying a kit piece by piece via aftermarket parts?

What would you class as a limited budget?

At the moment I only have about $150 to play with. I allready have a radio
and receiver. Some time back I bought a Airtronics M8 from eBay and a Novak
Receiver.

I'd buy the RTR HPI Savage 25, basic peak charger, 5 cell hump
pack,3000mah MiMH cell battery for the rotostart, 8 NiMH batteries for
the radio, fuel bottle, after run oil, 1 gallon of fuel, and a fail safe.

Depending on your skill and where you run the truck, you can get many
hours of enjoyment and not have to worry about upkeep and replacing
broken parts.

Can I get this for $150?

DuraTrax Evader or Traxxas Rustler
about as cheap as it gets

Go smaller scale 1/18th instead of 1/10 and go with a Losi Mini-T.

In terms of price, generally from cheapest to most expensive:

RTR
Kit
Piece by piece aftermarket

On your budget I would consider one of the Minis - Mini T, RC18 etc etc.
Even though they are electric they are pretty good fun. If you are
inexperienced, maybe the MiniT - its 2wd and simpler, and there is a TON of
aftermarket support and expertise.

Also the parts for the mini-t are fairly cheap and they hold up quite
well.
They can be upgraded easily on a shoestring.
Many tracks have classes for them so they can be competative as well.

You mentioned $150.  I can't think of any nitro worth messing with for that
price.  If your budget is that limited I am not sure how you plan to buy
fuel, batteries, charger, glow plugs and parts to keep it running once you
get it.  Tower Hobbies does make a RTR nitro stadium for $140 but I have
never heard from anyone that bought one but can't imagine it's that good at
that price, and you still need the stuff I mentioned above to get it
running.

I would advise checking out electric.  Your selection of RTR electric
vehicles for under $150 is far greater.  The Traxxas Rustler and Bandit come
to mind, and HPI has some cars for around that price.

If you still want nitro then I would hang out in eBay.  If your patient and
do some research you can get some really good deals on used vehicles.

Also check out your local shops and see if they handle used vehicles and if
they do, tell them to contact you if they get anything in.

Good Luck!

$150 is about £85 isn't it...

Look at electric, you may be able to *just* afford a 2nd hand Nitro thats a
decent brand, but you won't be able to afford to run and maintain it.

Nitro is expensive, electric is cheaper, but i don't know very much at all
about electric's, so i won't try offer any advice :)

Peter goto radio shaQ and get yourself a xmod.
These are a lot a fun and you can upgrade them as well.
they are only 50 bucks anyway. And with your left over money you can get
some more hop ups and and fun all winter long.(weeeeeee!)
If you want nitro you better plan on shelling about 3 bills to start
right.
Have you tried ebay? Maybe you can buy a used  hpi  nitro rs4-2
cheap, there sure are a lot of them avalible. They can be hopped up to
insane levels of R/C pleasure.
