Well, it's not really designed for "pep", it's designed for scale
looks.

With that said, an electronic speed control is probably the best
upgrade you can make. After that, you might look at oil-filled shocks,
ball bearings, and/or a faster motor.

Be warned that the model is top-heavy, and the detailed polystyrene
body will break fairly easily when you (inevitably) flip over in a
hard turn.
