Could a reverse 9V battery in Controller enough to break the controller unit?

Just got a new RC vehicle with a 27Mhz controller.   I bought a brand
new 9V battery and when I put the battery in the controller, white
smelley smoke started coming out of it !!  Now the smoke seems to be
gone but needless to say, I cannot operate the vehicle with the
controller (probably a fried circuit?).

I am trying to figure out if I was sold a malfunctioning unit (bought
it on Ebay) or if reversing the battery (+/- inverted) would be enough
to cause that.  I don't think that I put the battery in the wrong way
but then again, I took it out so quickly when the thing started
smoking that I could not confirm at 100% that I did not inadvertedly
switch the polarity.  Even if I had, would it simply make the unit not
work (without the smelly burning smoke)?

I don't want to wrongfully accuse the seller of selling me a defective
unit but at the same time, I am a little suspicious that putting the
9V battery the wrong way would create this effect...

It should not have fried the unit. Send it back.

An inexpensive unit such as that may not have an protection for reverse
polarity.
And YES would in such a case destroy the unit. Unless you have good
knowledge of electronic and can test the circuit to find the burnt out
components, and replace them. (Really not worth the time and energy)
If you cannot say that you did not reverse polarity, then I would say it's
your fault, sorry to say.

Your "controller" only requires a 9 volt battery?
This must be a Radio-Shack, Nikko, or other "Toy" type vehicle.
If you saw "smoke"... that is a pretty good indication something went
terribly wrong.
If ya got it off ebay, you probably can't send it back.
I would try to find another controller through the manufacturer, or
some other source.
Good Luck.

Let us know the brand and vehicle type.
I have a few old toy quality controllers. If we get lucky, I might be
able to donate the right one to you.
