Hello again,
I know, I know, don't tune by temp, that's what they all
say.................but I'm really concerned about the temps I'm seeing.
Megatech Gladiator, 1.6HP Q1.6 (.16) motor. Running Trinity 20/12 fuel.
Engine is now broken in and I started leanng her out today. The leaner I
go, the faster it gets, the hotter it gets. Right now she's running great
and temps are between 300-315* running it really hard. Engine shows no
signs of being overheated (no goofy idle, no loss of performance, no lean
bog, etc.).
I know I could go leaner and get more power, but everything I've read says
that 300 is just about as hot as you want to go.
Opinions?

My opinion..
If it runs well at no more than 275* ..leave it there..
If you have to have more power try 30% fuel..
or try a hotter plug..or bigger cooling head..or a .21-.28 ;)

Higher nitro content equals a hotter burn does it not?

Generally, yes, you will get less life from your motor using a higher nitro
content.
The assumption/opinion I have is that if you are running at over 300+
degrees with 20%
your probably not going to do any more damage to the motor than you already
are by significantly (25*+) lowering your temperature and running
30%........
With my models I simply find the richest point that it will run(and/or shift
for multispeed) ..and lean approx an 1/8 to 1/2 turn from there (dependant
on weather and factors) and they never seem to top over 250* and run
great.....
As another poster stated, I also use O'Donells fuel (20%) it's seems to be
the best....good oil content...clear(no blue or purple gunk left in the
tank) and an extremely good rust inhibitor (after run oil after every
tank?..no way).......
Combined with an MC59 (medium temp) plug......

WOW!!! That is HOT!! If I break 220F I shut down. Look at your head. At that
temp you should experience detonation. The head will be pitted around hot
spots. I run the O'Donnell fuel. It is extremely wet stuff. I have
discovered after years of running 2 stroke motorcycles that more gas and oil
entering the combustion chamber achieves 2 things: Cooling and a much better
seal around the piston. This means horse power. You may get HP under with
your current tuning. Then again I will bet a dozen donuts your engine life
will be brief.

Here's the weird thing............with break in settings for the first few
tanks, running it at no more than 25% throttle, and so rich it was almost
4-stroking, it would still hit 240*.
My other Gladiator with M16 (.16, 1.15HP) runs 265* all day on the same
track, and I have it tuned rich as well.
No detonation, and it doesn't act like it's overheating at all.
Trinity fuel is good stuff right? I'm running 20/12 right now. Would a
higher oil content keep it cooler?
I do have the temp guage loop set on the bottom rung of the head. Are you
basing your temps on infrared on the top of the head?

Oooh. Good question. I am using an IR temp gun. You can also get to a point
that too much oil will create greater heat. I would be curious to see your
engine temp with a IR device. We could be comparing apples and oranges.

I might bump the sensor loop up a few rungs and see how the numbers change.
The instructions for the gauge (MIP) state to set it on the bottom rung of
the heatsink, but the IR gauges usually measure closer to the head right?
For my engine that is rung 3 or so.
Thanks for the help thus far.
I've nuked engines by overheating before and this one is exibiting none of
the signs of overheating. No funky idle, no flameouts, smooth accelleration
from a dead stop, nice stream of blue smoke coming from the exhaust, no loss
of power as temps increase. Believe it or not, it runs better the hotter it
gets and seems to be really happy at 315*.

Like I said on the break in posts doc, try different fuel/plug combinations
and see what does best for your engine, once you have found a reliable
setting stick with that as that is usually where that given engine is
happiest unless you have found out different from elsewhere.
As for temp gauges.....never used one in 29 years of running engines and am
not about to start now...I know by now when an engine is running sweet or
not and like I said before.......the cooler the better. I have 2 cars
running too fast on nitro engines and 3 £1000+ scale heli's all flying
nicely...the engines on the heli's are the most critical and they are all
fine so believe me lol !!! (Yes, I can do autorotations but not fun when u
are not expecting them !!) ...As for me planes...well they are both happy

Oh yeah I forgot to add..
If you are running a pipe with high back pressure or an exhaust deflector,
they will cause higher engine temps from what I have seen....

Long, fat pipe, no deflector plate, and a pretty chubby header as well. So,
exhaust restriction isn't an issue AFAIK.
Gunna grab some O'Donnels and some Sidewinder Cool Power this PM and see if
she runs cooler with them.
