I'm thinking of ordering a Trinity Speed Gem Pro Amber 17T for my Rustler,
should I do this and keep the stock ESC or upgrade to a better ESC and even
lower turn motor?  I'm trying to find a good balance of power and runtime
and also I only have about 40 bucks to spend on the ESC and that is only if
the lower turn motor is about the same price as the Amber 17T.

Is this the right Pinion gear I need for use with this motor and the X-1
ESC?

Lower turns are lower runtimes.  You need to find a mix of speed and
runtime that makes YOU happy with the truck.   Keep in mind the faster
it goes the more parts you will break and the faster things will wear
out.  So you need to balance speed, runtime and budget when picking a
motor.  Currently most of my play vehicles are running 27t motors but
that's what suits ME and may not suit you.

The stock ESC can handle the 17t so I would not see any reason to
replace it if you only have $40.  I can't think of a $40 ESC that will
be tons better then the stock one.

The gear should fit.  I have seen other people mention similar
gear/motor/esc combos with success.

I was hoping to get one with brakeing the stock doesn't have braking.  I got
the motor put in today, but the 15T pinion made this horrible
ratchety/clicking noise so I used the stock and prob fixed although the
stock 18T pinion may make it run too hot.  Hopefully the bearings will
reduce the rolling resistance a little to help increase runtime a bit so
that it will still run as long as the stock motor did with bushings even
though I have a lower turn motor.

If you met someone at a track and they sold a used ESC that had a no
motor limit for 40.00?

Sure, if I saw it demoed with a 8-turn or better, or if he agreed to
refund on defects.

Not sure what your asking.  I rarely ever buy used ESCs, and when I do
I only buy them off people I trust.  Even ESCs under warranty can be
junk if abused since it will void the warranty.

The XL-1 has brakes.  Not great brakes, but it has brakes.  I am very
happy with my Novak XRS.  It has pretty good brakes, is small, handles
15 turn motors and is only $50.
