savage 10x16x5mm bearings stink

Just normal driving?? Damn, I would have thought the bearings at the wheel hubs would have been the first to go, considering they would have more load on them...
I personally haven't had a bearing that size let go, plenty of 1:10 scale on road's though. I wonder if the bearings from an 1/8th scale Inferno are the same size cause those bearings are the best bearings I have ever used in RC... I'm keen to check it out now!

It's so thin it's no wonder they blowout..heck the balls inside the bearing are teeny tiny little friction makers that last no time... I got rid of my T-Maxx for stupid junk happening like this all the time... Throw money at it and it breaks..over and over... I forsee in a not so distant future of me not even owning a Monster Truck if this crap keeps up. I have to say that buggies rule!

I got a sad sort of chuckle out of this post bud, mostly because I feel the same way! What did it take out when it blew? Mine lunched the entire diff + case last weekend when it went. I feel your pain, having play-time ruined by an inferior part. Mine lasted 3+ gallons, but I hosed em' with Tri-Flow Teflon lube before and after each run, which might have helped lengthen their life.
My playtime was cut short this weekend by the bud's T-Maxx pooping out (pull starter on wasp .18 broke). He ordered a Sullivan Tiger Drive to prevent that from ever happening again. We've been alternating weekends for who's truck is gunna take a crap........................next week is my turn.....................arrrgh.
I'm one paycheck away from grabbing another vehicle to keep as a backup, so when one of ours craps out we don't have to pack up and head home with our heads hung low. My choices are:
1. Another Savage, probably a SS 4.6 2. Ofna Ravager 3. Sportwerks Mayhem Truggy 4. Kyosho Inferno 7.5 5. Cen Genesis

It would have been funny if it wasn't s expensive, just because it was that ridiculous. You shoulda seem the damage after its first big jump - fair enough, it did roll a couple of times - but nothing that a Sav wouldn't just laugh at.

Damn thing is just too heavy I think. 21 lbs is the factory weight IIRC. Too much for plastic to handle IMO. The allure of the Gen to me was that it is HUGE, and has a HUGE motor. I have heard that due to it's large weight, the truck is underpowered, even with the 5HP .46 in there.
I'm going to grab another Savage. Likely a used one off E-Bay. Watching a few that end tonite around 8pm EST, currently the high bidder on one of em'.
It's just too good of a truck, and HPI has treated me very well so far per way of tech issues and warranty claims. The sent me over $100 in parts without even asking for proof of purchase just a few weeks back.

I suspect with the same bearings continuously going, there is some other problem that you need to find out...

That probably explains the fact that I have never ever damaged one, and my Inferno 7.5 gets a KANING in the gravel, the rears get absolutely flogged in those conditions...
Anyway, thought someone might like to know.

The reason the Savage bearings are smaller (well thinner anyway) is because the output yoke runs inside the inner race, in the Inferno's the yoke is much thinner.
I looked further last night into my manuals and its possible that the Inferno diffs may fit inside the savage diff carriers. The Inferno's use shims to set the gear mesh so its possible that it'll all fit. I'm certainly going to find out (prolly wont be before the w/e though). If they do fit, thats a perfect solution. They are both 1/8 scale after all...

M78Ultra - 01 Sep 2005 01:36 GMT I've considered this as well..as the Thunder Tiger EB4 diffs use standard 8x16x5 throughout as well... (have several extras lying around) Would just have to check the differences between the buggy and Savage in the pinion and main diff gear ratios. If worst comes to worst I will definately try this... I have several bearings coming to test first....I'm thinking the best bet will be the BocaBearings ChromeSteel Sheilded in a 10x16x5...(a hefty $5.75 per bearing though)..if these fail prematurely,I am going to find whoever makes the outer diff cases/gearbox holder in aluminum (preferably 7075) and see if the bearing outer carriers/seats can be machined to accept a larger bearing.......

I'm keen to find out, so I'm going to start pulling the front of the Savage apart tonight, the front shocks are allready missing from it as I am putting new oil in them. The Inferno's dont take as long to replace the diffs, they are designed for racing!

Yet another option I thought of tonight, was to have someone machine lathe the ring gear and my aluminum diff cup down to 8mm from 10mm (pending strength/thickness tolerance) so it would simply accept a 8x16x5mm bearing...
..waiting on results... =)

[quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > > ..waiting on results... =) <snip> Good luck with it, but I wouldn't hold my breath, I would say there wont be enough metal left to make the yoke strong enough, it'd prolly split right where the hole is for the locking pin, as thats where I've broken them in the past, from that hole up to one of the slots for the dogbone..
The 10x19x5 idea I like though, but I cant picture a bulkhead atm so I dont know how much plastic there is around there.
Still though, we have 3 possible solutions atm, all pending more investigation :) this is fun!
