Savage tuning findings

Hi all (Doc :)

So I took the Savage out last night just before dark and gave it a run.  Put
an A5 in there before hand.  Then richened up the HSN and leaned out the
LSN, okay she's running better, keep leaning out the LSN and bloody hell, on
gravel (only surface I had at the time), when you floor it, it instantly
hits maybe 25000revs (about 3/4 of its rev range going by sound) with all
fours wildly spinning.  Some more fiddling and the sound changes (to a more
alive sound), less smoke and LOADS more bottom end power.  It would have
been doing wheelies left right and center on bitumen.

Now I still hit this rev ceiling, the specs for the engine stat it revs to
39,000rpm, the Picco in my Inferno 32,000, the thing is the Picco sounds
like it gets to 30000 but the K46 doesn't sound anywhere near the same.

I also cant get into 3rd, so I really think that it isn't revving as high as
it should (hence not letting the 3rd gear kick in, not enough centrifugal
force).

When I was running it, I kept leaning out the bottom end until it wanted to
stall out after giving it full power for 2 seconds (so engine is using up
all fuel in crankcase) and then richened it an 1/8th, this ran great as far
as bottom and mid range is concerned, but still had the rev limit.  Once the
fuel got to the seam in the fuel tank, then everything went crazy, wanted to
stall after giving the throttle a big blip and the idle would be real slow
and poppy (I still haven't turned the idle down from break in so something
is screwey)

I'm going to have another go soon and if I cant nail it with the truck on
the ground, I try the old fashioned way.  Get a mate to hold the truck in
the air, I give it full throttle with my left hand and with my right hand,
adjust the HSN until max revs and enough smoke are coming out the zorst,
then adjust LSN to suit bottom end performance.

See how I go...

Cheers Dre

PS, Hey Dan, if your reading this and have gotten this far, is the LSN on
your K46 flush to the casing around it?  Mine is 1 mm *in* from flush atm!!!

I can't remember mate!  Off home at the weekend tho, so i'll snap a pic of
it for you.  Mine runs insaneo speeds at the top end tho, don't think i've
even touched the bottom end.

Also, i only use A3s :)

Damn, if you haven't even touched the bottom end, something is wrong with
mine then :(

I've tried an A3 and an A5, same diff, no revs.

If you could take a snap that would be sweet, thanks!

I think I'll go do the old fashioned tune, off the ground, pin the throttle
and adjust, has never failed me yet (fingers crossed)

The thing that bothers me is the amount of smoke still, the lack of top end
and the fact that I've turned the bloody mixture screws in soooo far!!

Btw, what does your engine *sound* like, does it sound like any other normal
.21 size engine??  (except of course the db level :)  Or does it sound like
it doesn't rev as high as a .21?

Thanks for the info!

Cheers Dre

Sounds like your LSN is too lean (poppy and stalling) and HSN is too rich.
I'd set LSN to flush, and HSN in 1 turn from flush.  Adjust HSN in 1/4 turn
at a time until you get the top end you want, THEN lean the LSN if necessary
and set idle speed screw.  Also, with the Savage half-tank lean, I'd only
fill the tank 1/3-1/2 full while tuning as it'll run rich at the top and
lean at the bottom of the tank; 1/2 full is a decent middle ground.

I would highly advise NOT tuning it while the wheels are off the ground as
the engine will behave completely different with no load and whatever tune
you find will be useless once the wheels are on the ground.

I'd also pop the air cleaner off and make sure your carb is opening all the
way as the linkage may need adjustment and could be preventing maximum RPM's
if it isn't opening all the way.

For what it's worth, my S-25 is also rated at 38,000RPM and it doesn't
"sound" like it revs as high as my Sportwerks .26 which is rated at 33,000
RPM.  Compared to the Savage, the Mayhem is absolutely screaming it's little
guts out at WOT.

Have you hit the motor with a temp gauge yet whilst tuning?  I'm curious to
see what temps your getting.  This is a great way to figure out which way
the needles need to go as smoke and sound can be misleading at times.

I got mine absolutely perfect this evening, while running out at an old sand
and gravel pit.  Ran better than it ever has before, held a constant
265*-275* and didn't stall, bog or misbehave once thru 4 tanks of fuel.
We'll see how long that lasts.

Yep, was going to say, next tune will be with fuel just under the seam..

Re the HSN, I cant set it with reference to its base, it is a plastic screw
that molds over the shaft.

I agree with you about the rich HSN and lean LSN, and I was going to test
this theory with the truck in the air tune trick.  I understand its not
going to be a perfect tune, but it is a good way to get in the ball park
with a carb with mixture screws up the warzoo!

Oh and thats why I asked Dan about his LSN and whether it is in or out or
flush, mine is currently 1mm *in* from flush (which when I was tuning it
thought bloody hell thats screwed in a long way)

Roger that, check, all good on that front!

Okay, this is promising, as my picco sounds a lot higher than the 46..

Might be a displacement thing or possibly just different pipe design (hmmm,
wonder how the pipe from the picco would go on the k46, double hmmm, wonder
how the picco would go in the savage! :)

yep, around 90-100deg so not at all hot.  Funny thing was when it was
stalling out right at the end of the run, the temps went down to 65deg!!!!
(Celsius)

This also is an indication that my HSN is too rich.

<mumble mumble>I'm jealous :)<muimble mumble>

Well the rain has held out today so I think I'll try and give it another run
tonight.

Thanks for all the help so far btw, much appreciated!

Cheers Dre
