I was up at Lake Tahoe last week and ran across this group of people. They were
playing a game of tanks vs. tanks. I talked to one of the guys and he told me
that is was costly.  He said it would cost me something like 3 grand for
everything...

Questions:

What does everything mean?

What does it cost to run an electric tank?

Or a 4x4 nitro off road truck?

I have around a grand to spend and I'd like to get myself a tank kit. I don't
want to spend 3 grand for a R/C model that may end up collecting dust. Also I
want to build the kit so if anything breaks I'll be able to repair with ease.

TIA,

Daryl

Sine you already have the links to the big tanks, let me mention some
smaller ones.

Iwaver has some tanks out now that are about $100 each.  They are small
electric ones and they can move, aim their turret and fire an infrared
cannon at each other.  The other tanks can register the hits and react
with sounds and lights.

For $600 you can get 6 of these things, invite some friends over and
play war in your house or a dirt lot.  If you have a 2 car garage you
could set up some terrain and have some fun.  While all the Iwaver's
are M1s, you could paint red stars and blue stars on them for teams.
Even better would be mouting wireless cameras on them and having
everyone operate the tanks from the next room.

For not much under a grand you could get the Tamiya 1/16 Tiger and the
optional sound and combat systems and radio.  The problem then becomes
finding enough other people to do the same to have a good battle.

You could also do a search for airsoft tanks.  These tanks shoot small
plastic balls.  They come in various sizes and prices.  Would need
somebody to act as ref to decide who is "dead" since the tanks don't
respond when a ball bounces off them.  Could open up other scenarios
though, knock over enemy base in the form of soda cans, get trucks from
A to B without getting hit, etc.

While I would love to do something along those lines, the only way I
could pull it off is if I bought all the stuff.  I need richer friends.

Assuming you have NOTHING related to R/C, it would cost you about $600 to
get started with a decent 1/8 monster truck.  Around $400 for the truck
itself and then $200 worth of support equipment.

The tanks range anywhere from $100 to $1000 a pop, depending on what scale,
maker, etc.

I'm contemplating doing just what Techpreist suggests and grabbing a cheapo
Airsoft tank (about $50 on e-bay), mounting a wireless cam and flashlight to
it, then puttering around my house (driving from my recliner in the living
room) harassing my cats with foam bb's.  This would be my wintertime r/c fun
as nothing compares to the speed, noise and fun of my 1/8 nitro trucks in
the warmer months.

For $1000 you could grab a nice 1/8th monster or stadium truck, all support
equipment AND a pair of Infrared battle tanks.

By nice 1/8th monster, we mean a Savage 4.6 Kit and your preferred radio
gear ;)

I thought that was a given, but seeing as how he's a newb thanks for
clarifying!  Any Savage will do, but the 4.6 is the creme de la creme.  I'm
really curious to see the new Duratrax Warhead in action
though.............looks to be a Savage ripoff with a much lower CG and more
adjustability out-of-the-box.  Also curious about the Trinity Nitro
Spyder..............looks kinda neat.
