Diff lockers - LSD's - Torsens

Hi all, I'm having too much fun with the new spool in the back of my E-maxx.
So much fun in fact that I want to do it to my Savage :)   <big evil grin>

Then I'd like to put some sort of highly limited (but not totally) slip diff
in the front of both trucks.  Ages ago I saw a Torsen type diff to suit a
T/E-maxx on ebay, but I cant for the life of me find anything about it
anywhere.  Tried googling etc and nothing comes up re a torsen.

A torsen diff would be ideal, but I understand they might be expensive.  I
know you can get them for 1/8th scale buggies, but not sure about a Savage
for example.  I'd rather steer away from an actual spool for the Savage as
the rear axles in the E-maxx are allready starting to twist and it has less
power (much less).  Even though they are hell easy to get.

Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions?

I guess it gets back to the old question, will an 1/8th scale diff fit into
a Savage diff housing...

Do you do any driving on surfaces with lots of traction (concrete, asphault,
grass)?  The spool is gunna kill your cornering on high traction surfaces
and eat the sh.t out of your drivetrain on all surfaces.  Everyone I know
who's slapped a spool in their truck has regretted it.  Then again, you
already know that!

I'd just go with the other posters suggestion and slap some super sticky
grease in the diff cup.  Costs little and no extra risk of torching the
diffs + you'll still have enough slip to keep your cornering on high
traction surfaces.

Looks like the guts from a Kanai or Hyper 7 diff will work with a Savage:

If you could find a LSD for those you could install in the Savage.

Not really (in fact never).  I mainly drive on very loose gravel or dirt.
The main problem I have is one wheel picking up off the ground (normally a
front) and then all power going to that (and it balloons something
shocking), plus I love rock crawling (in the Maxx more than the Savage).  Re
the cornering, I've found that with massive amounts of power that isn't
generally a problem as the rear end is quite tail happy :)

yep, allready tried that, I have that stuff in both my front diffs and while
it is better than stock, its no match for a nitro engine, or 2x 550 size
motors..

Well that sounds suss, as a SportMaxx (any Maxx for that matter, T or E or
the 2wd) diff isn't interchangable with a savage or 1/8th scale diff as they
are smaller (much).  A Savage diff is bloody close to an 1/8th so thats what
I'm going to use, particularly a Torsen.  Torsen diffs are great as they are
open diffs until one wheel breaks traction, then they lock up.  The savage
is too big and heavy to use lockers and since I'm allready chewing out my
rear axles I've decided on a Torsen.

I notice that I posted the follow up to my opening post *after* you replied,
and in that post I made mention of a few options re 1/8th scale diffs *and*
a possible solution to the diff bearing problems...

Take a look at this post:
http://www.savage-central.com/post282818.html  <warning, massive pics>

There is info on there about how to use other manufacturers diffs in
standard Savage bulkheads.  This is really promising as I still cant find
any sort of torsen (or LSD for that matter) diff to suit a Savage, all I can
find are ones for 1/8th scale buggies.

This also gets around the pidly small bearings that hold the diff in the
diff housing as the mod uses standard 1/8th scale bearings (which have a
smaller inner diameter so hence, bigger balls).

It involves machining the axles out a little so it requires a lathe (which I
have access to, handy :)

If I cant find anymore info re a diff that'll fit straight into a Savage,
I'm going to try it out.  Its going to take a while as I'll need to first
get a pair of bulkheads and another diff plus housing (I'm not going to
butcher my current diff, until I have a replacement)

Either way, I'll let you all know how I go...

I'm sure i once read that Lightening diff housings fitted the Sav, i'll have
a poke around and see if i can confirm that, and then see if theres a TorSen
available for the Lightening...

Well the less mods the better I reckon :)

I had a look for some info on Lightning RC (I've never heard of them) and
their webpage says they are 1/4th scale so I dunno how those diffs would
fit.  (but they might just use 1/8th scale sized diffs, who knows?!?)

Thanks for the info!

Duh!  Oh you mean *that* lightening :)  LOL!

Unfortunately the hotbodies page is one of the pages I visited very
frequently, but they never bloody update it!!  Not fair, I want juicy info
and pics of everything!

Anyways, thanks again for the info, gives me some more possibilities, you
never know, the guts of a torsen might fit it and then fit straight into a
Savage diff housing, no mods, beautiful!

Cheers Dre
