Building a Large RC truck

I want to build my son a big CAT Mining truck.  It will be 5' long,
2' high and have 10" wheels.  I think it would be cool if I could
make it a remote control truck.  Is it possible to get RC components
that could control it?  I don't want it to go fast, and would like to
use an electric engine and batteries if possible, but could also put in
a lawnmower engine.   I also don't want a go cart type of truck.

Thanks

My first thoughts would be quarter scale radio components and a gearbox
from a Power Wheels Jeep or something. Maybe even the WHeels from one of
those Power Wheels. I am sure you can find 1 or two of those at a flea
market or garage sale.

A thought would be to look at some of the ride on electric kids cars, jeeps
and trucks and maybe base your design on that.  Something like this will get
you a running electric vehicle then its just a matter of putting your radio
gear into it,  As previously mentioned 1/4 scale radio gear would be the go
for the servos and then its just a choice of what you want to add for radio.
I would think a 3 channel radio would be the least you would want since you
want forward and controls, left and right steering, and tipper controls.

As for a speed controller you can look at something like a twin battery
controller like whats in in the Traxxas E-maxx or the Hot Bodies E-zilla.
These offer fully proportional forward, brake and reverse and handle up to
14.4 volts.

I dont no if you plan to actually carry a load but winch servos as used in
RC yacht sails would suffice.

This web site has a huge list of spares available that you could probably
build your own design out of or just buy a ready made truck and add radio
control gear to suit your needs.

Cheers
Richard
