Having problems getting my nitro to start from cold. Just had fuel lines off
for last 2 days whilts reattaching pull start cover. Is there any checks I
should be doing?
Flappers - 15 Dec 2005 16:24 GMT
Check to see if your glow plug is in good condition.  Take it out to se
if it is really dirty.  You can also place it on the glow starter for
second to see if it glows.  If it's really dirty or does not glow the
it needs replacing.

Have you played about with the mixture settings at all?

Does your engine have compression?

Is your glow starter charged (that's got me many times before)

Let me know how it goes.  I'm not naturally mechanically minded and i
has taken me a couple of years to get all my engines sorted out.  99
of the time they fire up first time so I must be doing something righ
now

Good luck!!!

Brand new.

> Have you played about with the mixture settings at all?
No. The the fuel does get used at a ridiculous rate. Tamyia fs-15. Turning
the mixture screw into the carb. Would that be richer or leaner?

> Does your engine have compression?
Best way of checking?

> Is your glow starter charged (that's got me many times before)
Well It is getting a charge now.

This might be the issue, try turning the main fuel screw in 1/4 turn - in is
leaner.

Make sure the plug is good, even if it appears to glow it could be
knackered, you may try swopping it out for a new one.  A nice OS A3 i always
use myself.  Make sure its well primed - but not too primed or you'll flood
it, and make sure the glow start is well charged.

How old is the engine?  What engine is it?  Does it have any other problems?
What are the temps like where you are there?

Quite

Tamyia fs-15. I did l;ook at a few new engines the other day n a website.
How easy do other engines swap over? Or is it tamyia engine for tamyia
chassis only? tgx chassis is mine.

>Does it have any other problems?
I have yet to run it with the shell on because it either cuts out when I
stop it or when I have got it to tick over and stop at same time its using
fuel v.quickly. Which you have pointed out might be the mixture screw.

> What are the temps like where you are there?
I'm england need I say any more??? I do start it inside though.

Simon,

The best way to check your engine has compression is to pull the pul
start.  It should make a few pops and have some resistance in it.  I
it doesn't pop you have no compression.

Another thing to think about is your fuel.  How old is it?  I canno
explain why but I have had a couple of cars that will run on certai
fuels and not others.  When I've mentioned this in my local hobby sho
they laugh at me and say I must be doing something wrong.  I've spen
hours trying to get it started with no joy at all, drained the tan
tried a different fuel brand and hey presto! it worked.  If anyone ca
explain why this happens I'd love to know why.

Good luck and keep us posted

Well I've used 3 brands so far. Its a weird starting problem. Like last week
I put the glow starter on it for literaly 5 seconds pulled the cord off it
went. This morning I sat there for 20 mins pulling away no joy. I'm at a
loss. My engine is old. I'm thinking of just buying another engine. But am
not sure what engines would fit in my tamyia. Have had alook at a few on
ebay.

Are you consistently priming the engine?  It almost sounds like sometimes
you're correctly priming it and othertimes not.  Any .15 should fit your
model, but mods to the engine mounts, carb linkage and exhaust might be
necessary.

3 pumps each time from cold. 1 if its just cut out. Is a new engine really
going to be anymore reliable?

Depends on the engine, per way of new engine reliability.  WRT priming, you
want two full squirts into the carb during priming before starting.  After
the fuel has reached the carb by watching the fuel line, give it two full
pumps.  That should adequately prime it for starting.

Hi Simon,

I've returned to work (It's the only place I can get to this forum a
I'm far too busy playing with models when I get home to talk about the
as well).

How is your engine situation going?  Have you had much joy with it?

A big :( the bolt that screws into the crankshaft that holds the clutch on
has sheared. New engine for it in the new year. just a bog standard .18 from
my local hobbie shop. Lets see how much joy I will get out of that.

I was looking for a reasonable budget off road nitro car. Any suggestions
anyone? Buggy preferred.
Flappers - 28 Dec 2005 12:42 GMT
What is you exact budget?  I have a Hoboa Hyper 7 (about £250 if yo
lokk around hard enough) which is a 1:8 off road buggy.  It is s
reliable and damn quick too.

For about £250 this is the ready to run version but they make loads o
them upto about £500 but that is covered in carbon with all sorts o
extras.

If that is over your budget let me know

£250 would be my limit. I'll have a look at that one. Thanks.

<nods> Hypers are good.  Spares are plentiful and cheap, and the list of
mods is just endless.  Or maybe look at the new Schumacher Havoc - the boys
at http://www.rckingdom.co.uk/ have got one in testing, and they reckon it's
awesome.  Check it out...
