The radio I have, a Futaba 2PL didn't come with BEC, so I want to build my
own.
What would happen if I pulled pos and neg off of the main battery? Is the
voltage correct? Or will I blow up the receiver and/or servos?
I want to get the weight of those 4 AAs out of this RC10T4...

I have made one of these in the past
the source(Radio Shack) has or had 7805 voltage regulators which are
perfect for this application. If they don't you can easily find them at
electronic supply stores. The Schematic was printed on the back of the
packaging(Radio Shack). Easy enough to set up.
I know you can buy them already made as well but I don't know where. The
alternative is to buy a bec receiver and if your concerned with weight
that would be a good thing. You can get a really small one that is less
than half the weight of the one you have now not to mention saving space.

??Are you running servoS? I.e. a mechanical speed controller?
Just get an ESC, all of them have integrated BEC these days...
BTW, yes, the chances of blowing up your servos and the Rx are quite
high with 7.2V power straight from the drive battery...

I am getting back into RC cars after a decade-plus absence... So, I
unplugged the batt, and plugged the ESC into port 1 and it came right up...
Back in the day, we had a 4 AA pack to power the servos/receiver...

I dont get the picture
you Radio came witouth bec . A 2PL is a radio. it never has bec, your
receiver also dont have Bec he needs it.
So Wath ESC are you using That supplys the BEC.

All ESC's have BEC. You just don't need to connect the Battery connector
on the Receiver. Power for the receiver is automatically taken from the ESC.

Hold your horsies there MacPhreak, not all ESC's have a BEC. Especially
older ESC's & Economy to Mid-Range ESC's The very least you should do
when doling out advice is know what you are talking about concerning
the Model the question is pertaining to. Since you were not familiar
with the particular model and since the Model # was given to you it
should have been very easy for you to find out this particular system
(Futaba 2PL) comes with One 2PL AM Transmitter with crystal, One R142JE
receiver with crystal, and One MC230CR Speed Control. So he would
indeed need to buy or build a BEC or install the 4 AA Nicds for the
receiver. There are about 50 ESC's on the market that I am aware of
that DO NOT HAVE a BEC.

welllll. for starters the 2PL is available in three different servo and
servo/ESC options which are as follows.
1- TX/RX/1-Servo
2- TX/RX/2-Servos
3- TX/RX/1-Servo/1-ESC
It was not mentioned in the original post which one he had therefore it
was assumed he had the 2 servo configuration. This being said it was
obvious did not have an ESC because the ESC that comes(or not) with
these packages does have BEC.
See here, http://www.futaba-rc.com/radioaccys/futm0922.html
Hence he would not have an issue with trying to set up a BEC system.
I have been into RC Cars and Trucks for almost 22 years and all the
ESC's I have seen and this includes the ones mentioned here have BEC.
I know I said they all have BEC and I may be wrong. However, seeing as
all the ones I have seen on the mainstream market and at the local Hobby
Shops had it, it is fair to assume that they all do. I should have said
they almost all do. Also, the ESC's that do not have BEC are not
typically used for RC cars and Trucks. I remember purchasing a $60 ESC
about 9 Years ago that also had BEC. If I remember correctly it was
called the Dynamite. it was at the time the most affordable one with
Reverse and could take up to 13t Motors.
This is my expierence.
Do the research before you tell someone they are wrong.

According to Futaba's web site, the MC230CR has integrated BEC:
http://www.futaba-rc.com/radioaccys/futm0922.html
"Both include BEC for additional weight-space-savings and
factory-installed Futaba J receiver, Bullet motor and JST Battery
connectors."

A 2PL is not just a receiver but a whole system including AM
Transmitter with crystal, a R142JE receiver with crystal, a MC230CR
Speed Control, a S3003 Standard Servo,and a Switch Harness.

It didn't come with an ESC, I bought that elsewhere...
However, it did have BEC, and it works great...
