Ran Savage 1st time today...Question about lubrication

Hi Guys,

I'm the new kid on the block here. Normally I would lurk for a while before
posting, but I wanted to get a question answered quickly. Please forgive me
if I break protocol in any way.

I just built a Savage and ran it for the first time today. I broke it in
very carefully and patiently, and at the end of the day this beast was so
dialed-in I was amazed. Incredible acceleration and great top-speed. And the
amazing thing is that this truck literally (and I do mean literally) started
with 1 pull every single time.

I was wondering about lubrication, however. I pretty much followed the
instruction book when it came to lubrication. Not much lubrication was
called for, and I was wondering if you Savage experts can advise me on
points I should keep lubricated, if any. I assume lubrication is minimal due
to the danger of dirt collection, but I wonder if you guys, having been in
the trenches, have firm opinions about lube points.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

B,

Welcome to the group!

There ain't much that needs lubed aside from the motor which is already
taken care of.  I spray a wee bit of WD-40 into the drive cups on the
differential outputs and the wheel axles just to keep em' from squeaking
after every time I run it.  That's just about it.  I just serviced and lubed
all the bearings on the Sav after 7+ gallons of fuel and all were in pretty
good shape.

The differentials obviously need lube in the cups (I use automotive bearing
grease for quasi-posi effect) and also on the ring and pinion (also use
automotive bearing grease) which I check every 2 gallons or so.

After run oil ( I use Marvel Mystery Oil) after every run is also a good
habit to get into.  After 7+ gallons of fuel, using O'Donnels 20% Race Blend
and MMO after every run, she has no observable loss of pinch, compression or
power whatsoever.  Runs like the day I took her out of the box.

I don't think we have any protocol :D  But we do demand you get addicted and
spend wads of cash hopping the truck up, then take photos ;)  Also if you
crash into anything at speed and total it - we want photos of that too!

A lot of people use After Run oil - i've never bothered to be fair.  But
then, a lot of people clean their trucks and i've never bothered with that
either :-p  If I've taken it on the beach, I usually throw some WD40 at the
drive cup area, to make sure the bearings don't seize with the salt and
crap.

Welcome, hang around, the more Sav owners the better ;-)

I get the feeling this group should be called REC.SAVAGE.RC.LAND

;)

p.s I've set my self a target, enough cash to get a savage in 8 to 10 weeks.
Which one to get though is the question!

IME the Savage bashers are the nuttiest, most addicted r/c'ers out there,
which is why I think we take up more bandwidth than the folks who drive
other vehix.  I'm just about to head out and fire my beastie up for a few
hours of torture.  Got a new wheelie bar installed (Integy silver aluminum)
and I'm dying to try it out.  Will post back with the results.
