Magazine and Online Reviews

Howdy all,

Magazine/online reviews of r/c vehicles was mentioned in another thread and
I believe this merits starting a new thread.  The two big ones are RCU
(Remote Control Universe) and RCCA (Remote Control Car Action).

1) The first thing we all need to realize for both companies is that they
generate revenue from advertising.  The people paying them for advertising
are the same ones whom products they are reviewing.  They are not going to
give a bad review for a product if the company that produced the product is
paying them bookoo $$$ in advertising fees.

2) Second, have you ever read a bad review of ANYTHING on either RCU or
RCCA?  The answer is no.  Both tend to undertest the products (a few tanks
of bashing and a few tanks of racing) and base their review on very little
runtime.  Furthermore, they will glance over any problems and focus on what
was good about the vehicle due to #1 mentioned above.

3) Personal experience.  I based a not-so-recent nitro r/c purchase on an
RCU review of the Megatech Gladiator 1/10 monster truck.  The review
couldn't stop singing praises about the truck.  I read the review after
having found an auction on e-bay for a lot of two trucks for a great price.
I even found a few other online reviews of the product and all were signing
it's praises.  For the sake of being to the point and not going into detail,
they were the lousiest trucks I've ever run and I spent more time fixing
them than running them.  I got rid of them at a significant financial loss 2
months after purchase.  I won't even buy Megatech hop-up parts for my Savage
because the quality of the Gladiator was so piss-poor.

4) Personal Experience.  CEN's Genesis plain out sucks a.s.  Pretty much
everyone will attest to this.  Go ahead and read RCU and RCCA's review of
the Genesis; they are singing a different story.

5) Personal experience.  Losi Mini LST.  The first batch released had bookoo
problems.  Were these mentioned in the RCU or RCCA reviews?  Hell no!  They
completely glanced over this and went on to give it raving reviews.  It is a
great product but they should have mentioned the rather large problems the
first batch had.

6)  I could go on and on but you get my point.

The best reviews will always be from guys like you and me, who are out there
every weekend beating the living piss outta our vehicles and coming on here
to brag about it.  We don't have sponsors or dependence on a particular r/c
company for income that sways our views; I pay for my own sh.t just like all
of you do!  I no longer buy anything unless I know at least one person who
owns one and can give me an honest, unbiased review of the product.

My $0.02.

<snippety>

<pasted extract from other post>

I dunno about RCU reviews - they said the Genesis was good - and let's face
it - it's just not is it.  They're good writers no doubt, but the tests are
always done over the course of 1 day - that's not enough for an RC, new ones
are always good for the first little while, they need to be reviewed over
the course of a few gallons really, or at least a race weekend or something,
really give them some hammer and see if there is any issues.  Also, they're
hardly gonna bite the hands that feed them as it were....

Places like www.rckingdom.com.uk are good places for reviews - independant
and unbiased.  I tend to mainly look towards forums for reviews, real life
experience.  Also, not manufacturer forums or dedicated forums for which
truck to buy kinda advice, because they're full of fan boys.  E.g. go onto
Sav central, which is great for Sav advice, and they'll all tell you to buy
a Sav.  Go onto the Traxass forums, they'll all tell you to buy a Revo.  I
use www.Maxbashing.com a lot - lots of different opinions on there and
plenty of knowledgeable types.

Yep, it was your reply that prompted me to start a new thread.  The newbs
really do need unbiased information when they're first getting started.  I'd
hate to see a guy blow $599 on a Genesis and then leave the hobby 3 weeks
later d/t it being an inferior product and giving him a false impression of
what this hobby and it's products are really like.  There are (2) Genesis'
at my LHS right now for sale that are less than a month old for just this
reason.  Newb walks in with a wad of cash, a.shole owner sells him the
biggest most expensive truck there with zero knowledge of what he's selling
and zero advice given to the customer and three weeks later it's all
over......................

My favorite thing to do is set-up, break-in and tune a new nitro r/c.  I
like it better than racing or bashing.  This is however the worst time for a
newb who doesn't have a clue what he's doing.  I think it would be great for
LHS's to offer a setup and break-in tutorial for newbs for a small fee or
included with the sale price (some actually do).  This would get em' started
on the right foot and give them a workable knowledge of r/c stuff.  Hell,
I'd "volunteer" on weekends to do something like that just cause it's fun
and I'd have more folks to bullshit and bash with.

I'm a newb (don't like the name though, sounds like pube) and I am more
interested in electric than nitro mainly because I think I would be
completely out of my depth with a nitro as you suggested.  But what you
said about a nitro tutorial for beginners would be quite useful - any
chance of compiling one and releasing it on this forum as one of those
newsgroup FAQs?

Hmmmm, might be something I could throw together in my spare time.  I'd be
baffled if one didn't already exist as a 'sticky' on another forum
already..........

Wouldn't be a bad idea!  There's enough nitro heads on here to put something
really comprehensive together.  We could maybe pass around a word document
via e-mail until it's ready to "post" and then figure out what the hell to
do with it then.

As long as you don't have anything to do with the section on "keeping your
vehicle clean" we should be ok! <g>  Actually, somewhere between what you do
to keep em' clean and what I do to keep em' clean would be just about right.
I know I'm neurotic.................it usually takes me an hour per session
to clean up afterwards.  They always "look like new" though!

I agree. This problem is not just with RC mags, but really any mag
other than Consumer Reports, who accepts no advertising. I have seen
about 10 reviews in the last two months from numerous magazines, and
the worst score anyone product got in one category was a 7 and none of
the ten cars/trucks got a total score of under a 8. I take these
reviews with a grain of salt. I do like some of the specs, top speed,
acceleration, etc. I read these magazines for the 2 or 3 tips I may get
and to see what new products are on the market. I know before cracking
the mag that the ... brand ... truggy will be a 8-10 according to their
rank.

Probably true for the most part but there is also a line of psychology
which argues that you have "bought into a particular solution".  Hence,
you are more likely to defend your choices rather than being completely
subjective.

Me?  I have yet to buy anything since I had my Frog in 1985 so I'm used
to talking about things I know nothing about :)

I can understand where you're coming from and have seen that in the past.
I'll be the first to point out weaknesses and/or problems with stuff I've
bought and recommended to others as no product is perfect.  Hell, I'm a
Savage nut and have harped on it in here on numerous occasions (as have
several others) for a few technically-related issues (diff bearings,
half-tank lean and S-25 motor tuning come to mind immediately) in the past.

While I agree with your line of thought, I haven't seen that in here as
we're pretty honest with eachother.  I can remember a thread from a few
months back regarding the Savage diff. bearings where we all admitted
publicly that they suck a** and worked together to find a suitable
replacement (kudos to M78Ultra for that one!).

There also maybe something to the fact that one might tend to be
overly critical of an item. Maybe expecting too much from something and
not being realistic. I think this may happen with a type A personality
more often.

one reall ygreat way to stop torpid quality of RC magazines is to stop
buying them.  i'm new to RC (just a year or two ino this) and i got to
say, forget teh reviews....the whole magazine is just rubbish.

poor grammar and setence structure, articles that seem to say a whole
lot about thing at all, heavily biased reviews, layout and formats that
look like 3rd grade art projects.....

i'm stunned by the sh.t quality of these rags.  do they come in roll
form?

admitedly, i know what it cost to run a mag.  i worked for FHM for 5
years.  while the scope of RC mags is microscopic in comparison to FHM,
the basic concept applies.  if you're at the mercy of the people who
pay the bills...the quality is shitcan.

although, i did enjoy the letter to the editor about the rc club that
would find dirty needles and bums sleeping on their track!  hahaha

As far as magazine quality, I'd say FHM is not far ahead of most RC
mags.
thesuper - 02 Feb 2006 01:09 GMT
of course...i never said it was better or worse.   on the other
hand...i've not heard a SINGLE complaint about the FHM "content", until
today.  congrats, now i think you're gay.

but that's beside the point.  the point it....they won't stop pumping
out the trash rags until people...i mean kids...stop buying them.

i had subscriptions to all RC car mags.  1 year was about all i could
stand.

Yeah, most 17 year old pimply faced runts don't take the time to
complain. And your mother didn't think I was gay last night. :)
thesuper - 02 Feb 2006 20:45 GMT
of course they don't...who has time to complain when you're spending
other people's money.

seeing as how my mom is dead, now i think you're a necrophiliac.  you
may want to stop while you're "ahead".

DooD!  I thought he had you stumped with the ol' dead mother thing (I know
it shuts me up every time when I'm giving a rant of "yer mom" jokes) but you
just kept on diggin'.  Atta boy!  I never know if the person truly has a
deceased mother or if they're using it as a comeback.  I would guess the
ratio is 50:50.

Seems we have ourselves a troll!  Aside from that your logic is flawed.  You
didn't put "a single ounce of effort into a few on-line replies because

I only buy them for the pictures :)  Actually, I like the buyer's
guide/people's choice type editions best.  Can't stand the Extreme RC
mag - too much adult content which I think is inappropriate for an RC mag.
