Hey...
Can someone tell me their impressions when going from the Savage 2
speed to 3 speed?
Did you buy the assembled or kit version?  Is the kit version easy to
install?
Is it reliable and robust?

Seems really cool...i'm tempted to get one!

Thanks!

Joe,

I installed mine right after engine break-in.  I have 10+ gallons on the
three speed unit and I have had zero reliability or durability issues.
There are two flanged bearings inside the tranny on the main shaft that like
to puke every 5 gallons or so (flanges fall off the back of the bearing).  I
consider this normal wear and not a reliability issue.  I bought the kit and
it was very easy to install.

The performance is phenominal.  First gear is lower and gives you a great
bottom-end punch, and third gear is taller and gives you better top speed.
With a stock S-25 motor, stock 15/49 gearing and stock air filter and tires,
it increased performance hands down.  I'm curently running 16/49 with the
original S-25 with around 11 gallons of fuel thru it, HPI polished pipe,
motorsaver air filter and Dirt Bonz tires and it wheelies into third gear
whenever I want it to.

Now the con.  The transmission must be removed and completely disassembled
to adjust the 1-2 shift point.  The factory shift points were way off, and I
had to dissassemble around 9 times to get the 1-2 shift correct.  2-3 is
externally adjustable.  With the three speed, anytime you switch gear ratios
or put on tires of a different diameter, you're gunna be pulling the tranny
to adjust the 1-2 shift.

All things considered, I'd do it all again as it really does kick some major
a.s.

HTH,

Doc,
Thanks for input!  I'm sold!  Sounds pretty awesome to me.  Hey...have
you had any problems with the X in general?  I jumped the gun and
ordered one...but now I read on various groups about broken diff gears,
broken rotostart2 gears, broken spur gears...and what else?

Joe,

Glad to be of help.  I don't have an X, I have an S-25, but a few of the
issues you mentioned aren't X-specific problems.

1.  I'm pretty sure the diff gears in the X are the same as the S-25, 4.6
and LE versions.  The only difference with the X is the diff case.  The diff
gears are pretty tough and I haven't had any problems with them.  I've gone
thru two rear diff ring gears and one front diff ring gear in the 11 gallons
I've run thru her.  One time the rear puked because of a bearing failure
(after 4 gallons IIRC) and the other time was normal wear (5 gallons after
the first was replaced).  The front diff went d/t normal wear after 8
gallons or so.  Still the original pinion gears on both ends. I still have
the original spider gears and they show no signs of wear.

2.  Rotostart 2 is a new item, so I dunno about that one.  HPI's one-way
bearing is definitely a weak point IMO and I always have an extra one on
hand.  In 11 gallons I'm currently on my 4th one-way.

3.  The X does have a different spur gear which I have no experience with so
I can't comment on that either.  However, spur gears are a normal wear item
so you can expect to eat a few now and then.  I'm currently on my 3rd spur
gear after 11 gallons or so.  The first one got torched after I landed real
hard on the cylinder head and moved the motor a bit, knocking off the gear
mesh and melting the spur.  That was after 2 gallons or so.  I just replaced
the second spur gear a gallon or so ago when I changed out the clutchbell
for a different ratio, and only replaced it because I had a few extras
around and figured "what thell, might as well while I have it tore apart".

A note on the three speed install.  Call HPI and get the correct settings on
the clutches before you even install it!  If you tell em' you have a
bone-stock Savage X they'll be able to give you the recommended settings and
also a decent starting point.  The settings differ by tire size, gear ratio
and engine, so who knows what combo it'll be set for out of the package.

Also, get a wheelie bar; you're gunna need it.  If my old S-25 wheelies like
it does after 11 gallons of pure torture, that F4.1 is really gunna flip her
on her lid!  I tried the Integy aluminum one and bent it the first hard
wheelie I pulled, so I wouldn't recommend that.  The HPI one is pretty
decent, I'm using it now.

You did good with the Savage.  It's tough as hell and tons of fun.

Dont suppose you still have that info??  Just for reference etc...

Here's what's worked for me:

S-25 with stock 15/49 gearing and stock tires:
1-2 clutch 3/4 turn in from flush w/clutch
2-3 clutch 2.75 turns in from flush with threads

S-25 with 16/49 gearing and Dirt Bonz tires:
1-2 clutch 1 turn in from flush with clutch
2-3 clutch 3 1/8 turns in from flush with threads.

Yeah no sh.t, I should have listened to you then.  I went for the bling
factor rather than something that would actually work.  IMO the HPI wheelie
bar does look kinda lame but it works super well.

Doc,

Here it goes again....I just lost my post I typed up.  Darn cable
connection...

Thanks for your savage feedback.  I'm glad the truck has worked well!

For the Savage X:
rotostart2 - apparently a housing flaw such that the gears don't mesh
well.  many broken gear sets

new tranny case - flexes, causing the spur gear to bust.

diffs - many folks breaking diffs.  improper shimming from the factory.

Anyways...that's what I read alot of folks complaining about on the
savage forums.
I guess with any "new model", there are things to work out!

I'll keep my BOOTIFUL Savage SS4.6 thanks :)  <-  thats a big sh.t eating
grin there!

Flex??  my Savage doesn't FLEX?!?!?!   and even if it did, the RR steel spur
would hold up easy :)

Bah, I'll take strength over easy to replace diffs/trannies, hey wonder if
thats why they made em easy to get to :P

Agreed.  Even though it's a PITA to work on, I'm gunna keep my Savage 25 and
hold off on the X.  My next acquisition will be the Kyosho MP777 ST-R.
<drool>.  It's gunna take some saving as it is NOT cheap!

They just came out stateside a month or so ago; I dunno how long they've
been out on your side of the pond.  The first national race it entered, it
won.  It has been winning truggy class races ever since.  The MP6, MP7.5 and
MP777 have dominated the worlds for the past 7 years and I see the new
truggy doing the same thing!

I really, really, really want one.  They're about 8 bills over here.  I'm
gunna wait a few months and pick up a roller on e-bay.  The good news is,
most of the spare parts I have for the Kanai will work with the truggy as
they share alot of parts.  As much as I love my Mayhem ST, I'm thinking of
selling it and filling it's spot with this bad boy.

8 bills??  like 800 bucks??   Ouch!

hmmm, tax return in a couple of weeks is looking REAL good, LOL!

Yeah, $800 smackers.  That's about the same as the Kanai kits used to run
and MP777 SP2 kits run right now.  Now that's $800 minus radio equipment,
engine, pipe and tires.  Extra ouch!  I figure I'd have around $1200 in it
by the time it was ready to go.

Yeah, exxy!  I'd prolly moth ball an older car and use its bits but 800US is
lots more in Oz :)

Bugger it, I'll get one in a few months, maybe next year, but I *will* get
one :)

You and me both!  I'm gunna wait about 6 months and pick up a used roller on
the Bay' for a couple hundred bucks.  As soon as the MP777 ST-R SP1 comes
out the regular ones will be cheaper than dirt, kinda like what happened to
the MP777 when the SP1 and then the SP2 came out, or like what happened to
the MP 7.5's when the Kanai's rolled off the line.  Kyosho will have a newer
version of the ST-R out within 6 months IMO.

I cant believe I've had my Kanai 2 for over 2 years now.  Still as good as
new :)

Crazy to think mines a MP7.5 Kanai 2 and they have released 4 buggies since
then!

It is kinda weird.  My Kanai 3 is the shiznit IMO, but by competitive buggy
standards it's a dinosaur!

Tell me about, I'm exactly the same, they are a work of art!

Dont care though as I'll never be at that level, but for my level and what I
use it for its DA BOMB :)

Gonna take the old dinosaur out with the other dino, the Savage on the w/e,
fingers crossed its as nice as last w/e, the winter makes the weekends
really wet and horrible.

Need some more fuel though, makes note, get some on way home tongiht!
