Rear diff let go today fully.  It's been clicking for a while (it's about 3
years and 3 engines old, including an SH .28 and a K4.6 and it's seen the
STS.30 break in and loosen up...), but it's lasted amazingly well.
Conveniently, last night I ordered

http://www.rchopups.co.uk/item--6061-Savage-Hybrid-Bulk-Heads-Fast-Lane-Machine-
FLM40000--FLM40000.html

Which will be here tmrw, and I have a spanking new diff and pinion to slap
in - which is nice :)  It's the way it died that made me so proud.  My
insistence for no real reason on sticking to slippy teflon clutch shoes, and
super soft and low suspension, with 18/48 gearing means the Sav has never
really been an off the line wheelier - also because I've only just got first
gear working this week... (SH was still able to wheelie, with huge wheels on
too).  Today, went out to tune it up after fitting a new manifold and alu
clutch - got the tune right, nailed it (quite long grass) - MASSIVE 30 foot
wheelie  (no wheelie bar, dunno how it didn't flip - suspect just too low,
balanced on the Ti skid).  Landed in front of me (noticeable LOTS of
clicking from the rear...).  Nailed it again to do another huge wheelie -
floored it, front lifted, crunch - diff ate itself.  Convenient that I was
changing it tmrw anyway hehe!

Holy crap, I got so....much....to....learn.....

I havent a clue what you just said, all I know you bust something important
and you have a new bit coming to replace. it.

Where you lost me:
Rear Diff
SH.28
K4.6
STS.30
spanking new diff (suspect a shinier better Rear Diff - whats a rear diff?
 )
pinion
slippy teflon clutch shoes
18/48 gearing
SH was still able to wheelie (Whats an SH?)
manifold
alu clutch
wheelie bar
Ti skid

> Rear Diff

Rear differential, divides the power between the 2 rear wheels.

> SH.28

A 4.6cc .28 engine made by SH

> K4.6

A 4.6cc .28 engine made by HPi

> STS.30

A .30 4.9cc engine made by STS

> spanking new diff (suspect a shinier better Rear Diff - whats a rear

A replacement for the one I blew up :)

> pinion

The centre gearbox sends drive down the 2 centre drive shafts, these in turn
go into cups in the front of the front and rear differential housings, which
connect to a pinion (small cog) which in turn connects to the ring gear (big
gear) on the differential to turn it.

> slippy teflon clutch shoes

The type of clutch shoes I used to use, were black teflon, they slip a lot
and you get more revs than motion.

> 18/48 gearing

18tooth clutchbell (the cog on the front of the engine housing the clutch)
and 48 tooth spur gear (the main gear the engine drives)

> SH was still able to wheelie (Whats an SH?)

The SH was an engine I used to have, and it caused the truck to wheelie.

> manifold

Connects the engine to the exhaust pipe.

> alu clutch

Replacement for a teflon clutch, basically harder wearing and bites harder.

> wheelie bar

A kinda ugly little thing sticking out the back of a truck, with a wheel on,
that stops the truck from flipping if you wheelie.

> Ti skid

Titanium skid plate, the bits that hits the ground on the bottom of the
bumpers.

Well guess what???  I took my e-maxx out last night, didn't get the thing 5
meters away from me before the rear diff started clicking again.  WTF?
Those diff gears aren't even 10 battery pairs worth!!  Lucky (like you) have
a new set of Robinson racing hardened gears that I've been meaning to
install.

The sh.t thing is I wanted to put the new gearset into the back, then I had
planned to keep that old set as a spare for the front (which is still
original, 6 years old!), DOH!

Oh well, sh.t happens :)

Hell no!  Means I get to put tougher bits in there, LOL :)

So you going for a full metal Savage??  You'd be getting close to a full
metal chassis no?

No no no, the only none-stock metal I have is a centre skid, Ti front and
rear skids (which go over the stock skids) and shock towers.  I want to keep
the level of metal to a minimum really as it adds so much weight, and all
metal trucks (such as the MTA4 my mate used to have) seem to have durability
issues which shocks and things, also stuff bends and makes things that
shouldn't break break.  Only gone for the FLM Hybrid bulk at the back to
elimate the flex and try and help preserve my rear diff with the force of
the STS and Alu clutch :-)

Yeah good point, you dont want any flex in the rear diff housing!  For some
reason I thought you had metal a-arms as well...

Do those FLM bulkheads still use that oddball HPI bearing??  the one with
the tiny balls???

I have no idea - it says it comes with all the stuff required though.  Did
you look at the link I posted somewhere?  They're gearboxes and bulk head
combined and at £40ukp  they were not much more expensive than a GPM
Bulkhead and GPM gearbox, and we all know GPM stuff is made of cheese :)

yeah I checked em out, one word springs to mind:  SHINEY!

But you cant see a lot from the pics.  I'd be inclined to think they use the
standard HPI bearings...

No matter, stick a couple of torsens in there and you only have 2 of those
odd ball bearings in the entire truck!
