Looking for more than all else, good fun and durability for a crap
driver...speed would be cool too, but not HUGELY important...

That MTA4 is overpriced.

Just a few to look at.  The Havoc - I've heard good things
www.rckingdom.co.uk has a full review.  It is apparantly basically pretty
tough, with a few cheap bits that break a bit.  It also has the benefit for
a newb of the TTR.28 - EASY to work, and tough as old boots, whilst still
making good power.  However, they have STUPID wheel hexes so only stock
wheels will fit for now, I beleive they're bringing out a hex hub
conversion.  Also, they're only rear wheel drive - so this might limit where
you can reasonably use it, and it'll be a nightmare n wet grass or loose
stuff.  Fun it first, but just annoying when you can't get any real speed up
because of wheel spin.

The MTA4 is a good, solid truck with the same motor as the Havoc.  But, it
has 4wd, reverse and greater ground clearence.  Personally I hate reverse as
it only ever seems to go wrong and kill gearboxes, but it's definately a
good thing for a newbie who is likely to crash ;)  Just don't switch to
reverse whilst you're moving....  They are a good strong truck, not the
fastest, not the prettiest and not the best handling, but they will take a
hell of a lot of abuse before giving up on you.  MTA4 and MGT are *exactly*
the same - except spares badged as Thunder Tiger are cheaper - even though
they are **exactly** the same.

For a starter truck, I'd say the MTA4/MGT is a better bet.  Or maybe even
this...

Granted it's only a .21, but it's smaller and lighter than the MGT, comes
with all the upgraded Savage bits (4 spider differentials, upgraded steering
set up, 2 stage air filter and even has blue TVPs!).  Very easy to get to
grips with and as several of us here will testify - they're bloody strong.

In my humble opinion, yes they are better.  The Savage he speaks of is the
Limited Edition - they aren't made any more - you have to get a stock Sav
and add your own 3 speed.  But, if you can find a LE on eBay virtually brand
new for £300 or less - it's worth a shot, 3 speed is *very* cool.

See my other post for full options and opinions :)

Aye that's the one.  Lovely :-)  You'll struggle to find one in stock
anywhere though.

Yeah, that is the one...RC trucks in my opinion do not come any tougher than
a Savage. Basically it is the best RC value on the market in my opinion for
a Monster Truck..I have never seen any other RC take the abuse a Savage can,
without breaking.
The older Savage 25 RTR (2speed) and LE (3speed) are actually a bit tougher
than the newer Savage X (for now).
The X does have some newer features that are nice, but can easily be
transferred to an older Savage if wanted.

However, if you are set on a MGT/MTA4 or Havoc, that's cool also. It's
always your choice.

The other consideration to make is the availability of parts.  IMO, There is
no use having a truck that you cant just go into a hobby shop anywhere and
buy parts for it.  Sure you can always buy online, ebay or via a online shop
but its a waiting game then and sometimes you can wait for weeks.

Personally I would rather have a truck that's going to break and be able to
get the parts today than have one that WHEN it breaks, I gotta wait to get
repaired.  Sadly I have bought lesser trucks in the past for the reason but
continued to have fun regardless.

Cheers

Unfortunately my LHS only carries a decent line of spares for Cen buggys...

And let's face it, Cen stuff is NOT cool, so I have to buy online.
Thankfully Savage spares aren't exactly hard to come by.
