As per subject.

Hey Doc, I have the standard HPI savage clutch shoes in my Savage clutch
atm.  I ordered a set of those Mugen 1.1mm springs and a set of Mugen clutch
shoes exactly like the ones you listed the other week.

My question is, would you bother changing the clutch shoes at the same time
I change springs, bearing in mind the HPI shoes in there atm aren't very
old????

Or would you change them anyway while its all apart??

I guess I need to know if the mugen shoes are better cause if they are I'll
change em while its apart...

What engine are you running again?  K4.6 isn't it?  I found the stockers
were fine with mine.  With the STS however they've been slipping like bambi
on ice.  So I've changed them for some Hong Nor Alu Long Life shoes and
1.1mm springs - works a treat :)

Yep, a K4.6, I've never been happy with the way my Savage launches, or the
tune of the engine for that matter.  The only way I can get any sort of
reasonable performance out of it is if I run it at 140-150deg C (which is on
the hot side), any cooler and its a blubbering mobile smoke machine :)  Plus
its never sounded right, but that *could* be due to the ribbed pipe and big
bore engine.  Speaking of, does your new STS sound like a .21 size???

I'm not too worried aobut it though, I got the engine cheap and if it over
heats and sh.ts itself I get a real engine and stick it in.

The springs were cheap so I thought I'd give it a try since Doc had success
with his on a .25, I'm hoping that a .28 will bite even harder and launch
with some more gruff :)

You want a hard launch you need Alu shoes really in my experience - and
obviously a slipper locked riiiiiight down - which is how I have always run
mine.  The Hong Nor long life alu shoes stung me for about £9gbp delivered
and included both 1.1mm and 1.0mm springs.  The STS is quite loud and
crackly sounding - the K4.6 with the ribbed pipe was just obnoxiously loud -
hence me changing to the HPi polished Alu pipe - which in fairness gave me
more oompf as well I think.

Well I had alu shoes in there originally and they toasted in no time, I
noticed straight away the stock shoes gripped better when I put them in.
However, I think I may have had a bad set of alu shoes cause the ones in my
Inferno are still perfect and its run a hell of a lot longer...

Slipper has allways been hard down tight.  After the first one slipped, I
didn't notice, but when it came time to clean the thing, I noticed molten
plastic around the slipper, yep, it slipped, overheated, melted the plastic
on the spur gear and crapped itself :)  I then put a RR hardened one in
there and haven't touched it since!

Re the sound, I meant the tone, did your K46 and your current STS have a
lower pitch??  hard to describe, but do the big block motors sound erm,
lower then the .21's??  Mine at full revs has a much lower pitch sound than
the inferno at full revs

What engine is in the inferno?  Most big block motors aren't really known
for their high revs, smaller engines can rev high in nitro world - the noise
you refer to may just be the extra revs the inferno gets to - plus with
proper gearing and I beleive you have 3 speed, it actually takes a bloody
long time for the Sav to get to flat out - you may think it's there all the
time, but it's really not, try it on a long run (say 100m down a straight
road) one day...

Well thats exactly what I'm thinking.  But it revs out in 1st and 2nd for
example...  Also the K46 is advertised to rev to 39,000rpm which is 8000
higher than my Picco, unless thats BS :)

The engine in the Inferno is a Picco .21 competition motor so its no slouch.

Yep, 3 speed and RR clutch/spur gear combo, I forget the gearing but from
memory its the lower of the 2, so setup for acceleration rather than top
speed.

Your probably right though, its probably a combination of pipe, gearing,
bore size and a few others thrown into the mix :)

I'd leave the stockers in there until they puke, then toss the Mugen's in
there.  If it ain't broke don't replace it!

Yep, thats what I was leaning towards.  I just asked in case the Mugens are
HEAPS better than the HPI ones...

Thanks for the info!
