OK Snapped again, but this time differently. The KNOTTED end came loose at the NON handle end, somewhere inside the mechanism. There are four VERY SMALL allen bolts which if I remove I guess will give me access to whatever is inside - anyone any idea what I might find and how to "reattached" the string? I would have opened and checked, but I don't have small enough allen key yet. Will have it opened in TWO hours. You end up with a long bit of flat metal :) I've rewound lots of them, but its a PITA! There should be a hole in the mechanism that holds one end of the spring inside. Once you undo the 4 bolts, you'll be able to remove the pull start off the engine, look inside and you should be able to see where the stick gets tied to. Just a hint, when your pulling the pull start off the back of the engine, as soon as a gap appears between the pull start and the backing plate, slide something flat into the gap and use this to push the pull start center off with its housing. Otherwise you risk leaving the one way bearing and its surround stuck to the shaft and this will definately pull the spring out... Otherwise if the roto start still works without the pull start string then dont worry about fixing anything and just use the roto start. I no, flat battery on the drill doesnt help it start but it wont break on you either. I usually cut my finger tips up when trying to rewind a pullstart spring. For $15, I'd rather not f**k with it and just buy a new one, which is what I have done in the past when they've popped on me. Doc I have rewound a few and cussed at all of them and all have never been as tight as original, resulting in having to cut cut the string shorter to get proper tension. That spring is the worst thing about a pullstart. I personally think that they need to make them a little more robust, especially considering how they are treated. Every single one I have rewound I've sat there looking at it thinking how the hell do they hold up so long... There is a better design, it's called a rotostart! ;-) Seriously though, breaking in and tuning my buds O.S. .18 had me missing the ol' yank yank cuss routine............so I'm gunna try the pullstarter on my new SWK .26 when it gets here. It fires up instantly with the roto on my other vehix and hot starts have never been a problem so once it's broken in and tuned it should be the equivalent of starting on the first or second pull once primed. At the FIRST sign of being cantankerous she's getting a GS backplate and the HPI roto off the S-25 though! With all the $$$ I saved on that mill I was able to grab some Mugen Alu shoes, Mugen 1.0 springs, fuel scent, (6) #8 plugs, a few exhaust couplers and some CA all for well under what I would have paid for the O.S. mill alone. Gotta love bargains! Next on the list is some new wheels and tires for the Mayhem ST (the Bonz are getting bald..............finally.................damn things last forever!) as well as some wheels and tires for project Kyosho Muggy. My bud was driving up my street the other day and could smell my Savage before he could see or hear it. He said he smelt it about 1/8 mile down the road from my house!
