3 motors in three months..........I'm on a roll!

Well, cooked another one this evening; that's three motors in the last 3
months!  DAMN!

1. My buggy motor (Sportwerks .26) puked a few months back when it ate some
dust at the track d/t an air filter leak.
2. Savage motor (S-25) wore out after 16 gallons last month.
3. Truggy motor (Sportwerks .26) started acting goofy this evening and when
I yanked the motor apart I found a piece of the sleeve liner had flaked off,
wedged itself between the piston and the sleeve and had actually wore a 2mm
wide flat-spot on the side of the piston, from the very top to the very
bottom!  FWIW the motor had around 5-6 gallons on it (I lost count).

So, I'm pretty p/o'ed!  Goddamn truggy hasn't run right all summer.  First
it was that weird-a.s fuel delivery problem d/t a partially plugged in-tank
filter, then it started eating clutch shoes left and right, and now the guts
are fubared.  The crank is grooved where the clutchbell bearings would be
sitting as well, so I'm gunna keep it for parts and grab a new motor for it.

Mach 427 here I come!

When conversely, I haven't killed an engine for ages now hehe :-)  I've even
got the old K4.6 going great guns again!  The Revo is flying (idle is a bit
lumpy...) and still indestructable.

Bad luck on the engine dude - sounds like that trug is jinxed - get shot and
get one of those new Kyosho ones ;-)

Dude, those have been my exact thoughts for the past few months!  The new
ST-R's are BADDASS!  Pricey though!

The beer <thankfully> as it's alot cheaper.  When my buds and I bash, we'll
run them for 1.5-2.0 hours nonstop, which equals about two quarts of fuel (4
fuel bottles worth), so two good bash sessions and I've drained a gallon.
When I practice at the track I'll run em' for about an hour and a half so
1.5 quarts there as well.

I actually looked into mixing up my own fuel, which on paper would save me a
bundle, except for the bloody HAZMAT charges on the methanol and
nitromethane which make it about even.

Just broke in the new Mach 427 this evening.  Ran three tanks thru her (heat
cycled) and she's just about ready for the final tune!

What do you need to make your own nitro? Come on spill the secrets.
Doc - 08 Oct 2006 16:55 GMT
> What do you need to make your own nitro? Come on spill the secrets.

No secret really.  You need:

1. Methanol
2. Nitromethane
3. Lube package (Klotz is a big one)

All three need to be mixed according to the nitro/oil %'s you want.

Doc
g20zoom@gmail.com - 11 Oct 2006 00:33 GMT
Yeah...I heard it's really not too bad if you can use that much fuel.
ie 30+ gallon batches.
Although you need a good method to mix the fuel...without igniting the
alchohol.  Electric mixers near the fumes would probably not be a good
thing.  Also...gotta keep the fuel dry from air moisture.  My local
hobby shop charges almost $30 for Trinity 20% nitro/gallon.  It
definitely has gone up quickly in the last few years.

Hey...what kinda of hazmat fees are we talking?  just curious...

5 gallon pail of 99.90% pure methanol............$30.
1 gallon can of nitromethane = $40
2 quarts Klotz R/C Castor = $20

HAZMAT fees vary by product and volume but are approximately 25% of the
original price.  So, for enough juice to make 5 gallons or so of 20% nitro,
minus the oil package we're looking at $30 (methanol) + $40 (nitro) + 25%
(HAZMAT) =
$87.50 + $20 (oil) = $ 107.50

I can get O'Donnels 20% race blend by the case at $22/gallon.  That's $110
for 5 gallons,
a mere $2.50 more than having to mix it myself.

Yeah...the numbers don't look so good.  Maybe the key is to do more
volume...like 30+ gallon drums.  :)
How about a 30 gallon drum of Meth(anol) picked up locally?

You're right, if you could do it in bulk and not have to pay HAZMAT fees
you'd be in like flint.  Problem is, 30 gallons of methanol = 50 gallons of
mixed fuel and I a) couldn't use that much in a reasonable time frame; b)
have nowhere to store it that's cool enough to be safe; c) don't feel like
having 50 gallons of highly flammable liquids laying around!!!

Yeah, I nabbed a Mach 427 for $103 delivered from the bay.'  Essentially the
same motor as a Sportwerks .26 with more aggressive porting and a different
carb.  It's the stock motor on the LST2 and the new Muggy from Losi.  I'm
hooked on Dynamite engines.  I'll run em' till the day I die.  Cheap as dirt
and they outperform pretty much everything else out there.  The new Platinum
line looks promising!  I was thinking of grabbing a .21 for the Kanai to
make it ROAR legal.

On that subject, I just ordered some OFNA full-offset MT dish wheels and
some Panther Komodo low-profile tires to convert the Kanai into a
short-wheelbase truggy of sorts.  We'll see how she does on Monday.

Now I just gotta snap some damn pics of everything and get my website up and
running.  The Savage is absolutely gorgeous right now with the recent
additions, and the Mayhem ST has changed quite a bit since the last round of
pics I snapped.

Nice, I'm allways interested to hear about these types of engines, the cheap
performers caus elike you say, they are cheap as dirt so who cares if you
snot one :)

I've got my pics sorted, just need to put them up somewhere.  Looks like a
shitty w/e re the weather down here so I might have time to do it!

Grab a Sportwerks .26, run it with HPI Polished pipe, 16/49 gearing and
Mugen alu shoes with 1.0 springs in yer' Savage and you will NOT be
disappointed!  Damn thing is an animal!  It eats K4.6's for breakfast now!
They sell pretty much everywhere for $129USD.  If you're patient you'll find
one on the Bay' for under a hundred on occasion.  I have the same motor in
my Kanai, running a THS 8015T pipe with 14T clutchbell and carbon shoes +
1.0 springs and it's a land missle as well.

Put it this way, the owner of the track I run at has a huge hobby shop and
has access to pretty much anything he wants for what he pays for it.  He
runs a Sportwerks .26 in his Mugen buggy, his Kyosho ST-R and in his Savage.
He's got the Rossi's and Picco's there, but he says the Sportwerks motors
perform better regardless of cost.

No sh.t!  They sound like monster motors!

So have you run yours against a K4.6 powered Savage??

I run a K46, 16/48 gearing, 1.1mm mugen springs in the clutch, currently
have the ribbed pipe on there but have the polished one to try out.  You
really think it'd give me a big improvement??

On the bottom end you wouldn't notice too much, but on the top
end...............the SWK .26 revs out 10K higher than the K4.6.  I've raced
a K4.6 Savage since this upgrade, same gearing, both had 3-speeds as well.
We were dead even until 3rd gear; when I hit third I just left him in my
dust as he revved out while I was still accelerating.

Here are some specs from the XRC dyno:

HPI Nitro Star K4.6  1.32 @ 22,250 rpm 59.52 oz-in @ 19,750 rpm 35,000 rpm
w/ kit $200
HPI K4.6HO             1.28 @ 19,500 rpm 64.76 oz-in @ 19,500 rpm 32,000 rpm
w/ kit n/a
Sportwerks 0.26        1.30 @ 26,750 rpm 53.76 oz-in @ 19,000 rpm 42,750 rpm
w/ kit n/a
Team Losi Mach 427 1.31 @ 26,750 rpm 53.80 oz-in @18,750 rpm 43,250 rpm w/
kit n/a

I have also destroyed an MGT 4.60SE (no chance!!) and my bud's O.S.
.18-powered T-Maxx (also no chance).  I'm a top-end guy.  I prefer tons of
top-end power and revs than gobs of bottom-end torque which just produces
uncontrollable wheelies anyways.................

Well I might need a new motor soon cause yesterday I couldn't keep my K46
running.  It'd scream when you floored it, but as soon as you put the brakes
on for more than a second, stall.  Wouldn't idle either BUT I'm hoping it
was the plug, I didn't bring any spares with me (why is it whenever I sh.t a
plug, I've never brought a spare with me??!??!).

OTOH, when you take the plug out, it has very very little pinch...

Meh, see what happens next time I run it.

Do you know if you can get a Nova head for the sportwerks??  (I cant have a
*blue* engine head in my black/silver/purple savage :)

Hmmm, there isn't really much stopping me then is there :)

0.28 -> 0.26 = drop in capacity but hey, if it puts out the same power I
only lose bragging rights, LOL!

Okay so there is one new one on ebay, 6 days to go, I'll see how that one
turns out!  Wish me luck :)

Actually I've been meaning to ask this for ages.  If you buy a new motor is
it recommended to run it in first *before* plopping one of these Nova heads
on??  (purely due to it being easier to get to temp with a stock head).  Or
doesn't it make any diff...

Yes, I have always broke the motor in with the factory head and pipe before
adding the upgrades.
I don't see any reason to do it any other way as you wouldn't see the gain
(or loss) in performance as opposed to the factory setup.
And yes, the Nova Head would keep your temps down more so your heat cycle
might not fair as well.
HTH

PS.. If there is a Best Offer option on the Nova head..email the seller and
see what the best deal is and save a few $.

Nice, thats what I was thinking...

Well I'm starting to get a bit excited about the potential engine upgrade :)

I think the head did have a best offer so I'll give it a try, worst case I
pay the auction price (which is still quite reasonable)

Thanks for the info!

What do you run in your Savage btw??

I have a Nova Pro Race Head on the factory .25 with a CVEC adjustable tuned
pipe on the Savage.

Just installed a Nova Head and same CVEC pipe on my new Ofna Ravager
Force.28 after I broke it in and ran it for a couple of tanks after break
in...Haven't got to run it yet  with the new stuff  'cause of rain, rain,
rain!  =(

Nice!

Hehe, it was grey and raining yesterday, then blue skies and sun, then grey
and raining, then blue skies and sun, repeat lots :)

Right, so Nova heads are the go then, I'm convinced, pity they dont make a
purple annodized one, or do they?  goes off to look...

I always break em' in with the stock head for the reasons you list above,
then swap em' out for the final tune.

I have one installed on my Savage right now.  I did have it installed on my
Mayhem ST before, but when she puked I swapped it over to the Savage.  The
Mach 427 is broken in and tuned.  Much different engine than the SWK .26,
given that internally they're almost identical aside from the porting.  It's
not quite as ballsy as the SWK .26 IMO, but it might just be the pipe.  I'm
gunna slap an HPI polished jobbie oh her sometime soon and give her a run.

Righto, well I'm watching a new sportwerks .26 on ebay atm, ends in 6 days,
if it stays cheap I'll pick it up along with a Nova head.

Get this, I got a polished pipe from Tower last week.  It arrrived but it
has a dent in the side.  I emailled Tower and said, how do I return for
refund, they told me to throw it out, they'll send a replacement airmail!
How cool is that?  I'm certainly most happy with that!
