I got a new body for my Hyper7, , looking to paint it. Anyone know how
to tell if a spray paint is "Lexan Compatible"? Is it going to be a
special paint, or somethng I can get from the local hardware store?
Thanks

You need polycarbonate paint for lexan bodies. This is only available thru
hobby outlets. You won't find polycarb at the hardware store. Also, if you
decide to overcoat, make sure the undercoat and overcoat paints are made by
the same manufacturer or you might have some adhesion issues down the line.
Remember to use THIN coats, and lots of em', letting the paint dry
in-between coats. On a buggy body, you should get 7-10 coats out of one
can, and will need to use the whole can to get decent color/coverage. I use
a hair dryer to expedite this process in-between coats. Use a black
overcoat to deepen/richen the undercoat color, or you can use silver as an
overcoat to sharpen and brighten the undercoat color.

The main reason for the polycarbonate paint is that it was designed to flex
unlike a lot of the water and oil based house paints you get from the
hardware store.
I just did a body for a M03L Mini I was given when I bought another vehicle
off ebay. I prepared the body with liquid mask and then started with the
darker colours first. British racing green for the main body, black for the
windows, pearl silver for the grill and headlights and white on the roof. I
will be touching up the rear lights with red and amber clear paint so I can
put led's in for brake lights and I am putting a clear led in each of the
park lights in the front of the body. It only took me 40 minutes to put 4
different colours on the body from the time I started using a airbrush.
The one major thing to remember if you plan on doing a multi coloured body
is to put the darkest colours on first and finish the body with a overcoat.
Its also worth noting that you might be better off trimming the body and
drill all the mounting holes before painting it. I find it hard to paint
some bodies and then trim afterwards because I scratch the paint. You
shouldn't need to cover the holes up before painting the body because the
clear film on the outside should protect it from over spray.
Cheers
